Why not buy a Dan Wesson .45?

I saw a very nice looking Pointman Major-C, blued with the adjustable sights and all the bells and whistles in Very Good to Excellent condition with little wear at all for sale this weekend for $575. Now, I've narrowed down my search for a new handgun to a Beretta 92, although I'm still not 100%, but I couldn't help but wonder if this is a good deal.

I searched the posts and didn't find a wealth of info on these pistols, has anyone got any insight before I get my free safe with my NIB Beretta 92???

Ad,

Never handled or shot one, but check the current issue of Combat Handguns, for a review of the Dan Wesson Pointsman.

The author claims supurb groups with that gun, and though I take most reviews with a grain of salt, this one comes with photos of the target, and the groups are truely remarkable.

I've seen mentioned in a couple of places, but don't know first hand, that the DW .45 is not a true 1911 clone. That would mean that some number of parts, or maybe most of them, won't interchange. How important this is to you is also up for grabs.

They look pretty nice but when you get one with all the trimmings (Jarvis bbl) it comes to $900 bucks. It had a hellacious good trigger, though.

Con: The markings are laser engraved, kinda like an import marking on a cheesy AK47.

DW .45's

I spent 20 minutes or so at the DW booth on the NRA convention floor this past May. The guy working the booth (Sunday afternoon) said straight up that they're using Essex frames & slides & a lot of CMC internals. Supposedly, Essex had QC problems a few years back, but those have been resolved.

Fit, finish & triggers on the booth guns (10 or 12 different 1911's in .45, .40 & 9mm (I think) were all good. But they were booth guns. :)

IIRC, he said they have been shipping since early in 2000. I frequent most of the gun shows in the DFW area & while Springfields, Kimbers, Colts and ParaOrds are readily available, even new Wilson's & Les Baer's for sale, I've never seen a DW .45 on a show table.

Seems to me like a Catch-22 deal: If there aren't many, I'd be a little uncomfortable buying one. If nobody wants one, there aren't many around.

If present ownership really wants to sell 'em, they need to seed the market. Not just a couple of laudatory gun rag articles; figure out a way to get folks out shootin' 'em.

Saw a Pointman at a gunshow here in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Everything about them seemed good. didn't shoot one though.

Why not indeed?

They ARE 1911s...They use all quality parts and every bit a Dan Wesson product. Maybe no one that bought them has parted with them for a reason?!
The foundation is indeed Essex and the few reports I've heard mirror the above...The one resounding theme seems to be the amazing accuracy. I haven't had the chance to shoot one yet. I have the feeling that it may not be long... ;)

GunHoo Auction has 2 of them. A SS and a Blued with laser grip. Price is $500 on each, but reserve not met. SS has adj sights and blue has fixed. They look nice. Just do a search on pointman and you can check them out. It would be nice to see what they actually sell for.

I do believe that I would own one tomorrow if they could be sold in Mass.. Hell you think Kali is bad, come to Mass...Nobody will
ship a gun to this state because there is no listing of what is allowed..Buy an old gun that has been in state and was made before 10/98,at inflated prices, or buy nothing..

Thanks for all the insights... if it were up to me, I'd have about 4 new toys by next week, and this Dan Wesson would be one of them. But, first things first...

Bompa: Check with Dan Wesson at their web page, I think they claim to have pistols available for sale in MA NIB. www.danwessonfirearms.com

I'm from MA originally and I'm becoming more and more familiar with the firearms laws from my beloved Commonwealth.

I recently bought a Dan Wesson Pointman minor in the blued finish. I currently have two Kimbers and a Springfield loaded to compare it to.

I paid $500 out the door for the Pointman, it is the gov't model and has thin checkered wood grips that are very nice. It also has all the bells and whistles that one has come to expect from every 1911 manufacture.

I have only had the chance to put about 75 rounds thru it so far. The accuracy was very good , every bit as good as my Kimbers.

The only problem so far was with the supplied mag, it won't lock back on the last round. I used some Mec-Gar mags that I had and it worked fine.

For the money I spent, I have been very satisfied so far.

Dan Wesson

Got mine before the Calif. ban went into effect...got the Commander length, two tone.

Sweet shooter...If I didn't have the USP, it would be my primary choice for a carry/self-defense gun...here in soCal we don't get to carry...the leaders feel that we are not worthy.

But the Dan Wesson is a well put together .45...500 rounds so far, very reliable...no problems...bought Wilson Combat mags...works real good.
