Why no Rugers in 404 Jeffery

Must have been 2 or 3 years ago Ruger listed it's #1 as to be available in 404 Jeffery. May also have listed 416 Rigby as well. Don't remember if they were going to put either in the 77 - doubt the bolt action long enough to handle length of either round.

Reason am interested is that I hate the recoil from the 458. The 404 is listed at 80% of the 458's bullet weight ( 500 gr. vs 400 gr. ) and also about 80% of the 458's energy ( roughly 5000 ft. lbs. vs 4000 ft. lbs. ).

But I've never seen any more news on this. What happened? Is there no ammo available? Has Ruger killed the plans for a 404? Has anyone heard anything at all on this?

They might have decided there was not enough market demand to justify it. At least the .458 ammo is readily available in larger gun stores, and cartridge is a known quantity in the mind of many shooters.

If recoil is the issue, why not handload? Easy enough to use lighter bullets and/or lesser powder charges.
