why New Mexico permits 1 only?

I read that recent legislation concerning the New Mexico "concealed handgun license" authorizes the carry of only 1 pistol.

Any citizens of New Mexico reading this? If so, do you know how or why this decision was reached?

I don't carry a back-up, and my CWP is not recognized in NM anyway, but it seems kind of strange for 1 pistol to be legal and a second pistol to be illegal...

So you cant kill as many people silly.
Unbelievable, they actually thing that’s going to make a difference?

It makes no sense, and I have no idea as to the reasoning. Maybe a future change to the law will get rid of that.

I must admit, however, that I never carry but one gun. I consider that if I have to use it the encounter will be at close range, and over in seconds. I cannot, realistically, imagine getting into a gunfight where I would need another gun and 20 rounds of ammo. A lengthy gunfight in the Walmart parking lot is for police, and not necessary for a CHL holder in my opinion.

But I still hope the law will get changed. There are other more serious problems, such as no carry where alcohol is sold, even in Walmart at this time. It is just nonsense, and I hope we can get a change so that the alcohol rule is like the Texas 51%.

Last I saw N.M. is also one of those states that don't honor any other states license. Is this still true? Makes it restrictive for vacation travel. I've wanted to go to Santa Fe for some time, but I don't go where I'm not wanted.

Right. Until last year, the minimum age for NM cwp was 25. Since all other states had 21 as the age, NM looked at the others as not measuring up, so there was no reciprocity. Last year the NM minimum age was lowered to 21, opening up the theoretical possibility of reciprocity with other states, but so far nothing.

NM law allows any adult (permit not required) to have an accessible loaded pistol in the car or domicile. So when I travel through the state I keep it in the car or motel room. Could be worse.

My state (CO) has excellent laws related to carry and liquor. Of course you can't carry under the influence, but there is no restriction about carrying in bars, liquor-selling restaurants, or liquor stores. I don't drink outside my house, and don't enter bars anyway, so I can patronize almost any restaurant without even thinking about whether liquor is sold there. (Almost any, because there are couple of restaurants that are posted no-carry. Of course I choose to avoid these establisments.)

They're working on reciprocity with other states as I write this. It is the land of mañana, after all. :)

The one-gun-only line got written into the law by an anti-gun legislator. PM me if you want more info.

Unfortunately, the likelihood of the liquor aspect of the law getting changed is pretty much slim and nil. (Because of my wife's gig, I know a lot of the legislators and lobbyists and have spoken to them about it.)
