Why I carry a handgun in the woods

I saw ravens feeding from a distance. As i approached, the birds flew off. I could see something low, I thought it was a coyote. I got up to around 75 yards and the mature wolf stood up. I pulled out my Cannon pocket camera and started shooting. I was carrying a Blackhawk loaded with 180gr hard cast bullets made by Buffalo Bore. The wolf fed for a while and then walked away.
The paw prints were over 4 inches from toe to heel.

Great pictures.

Good thing the wolf had already eaten it's dinner and wasn't hungry. It may of eyed you up as it's next meal.

Go Spartans!

I am not sure how good I am at shooting at a running target esp. when it's running straight at me. Buckshot would be a better choice. I guess a handgun is better than no gun at all.

Wolf attacks on humans are very, very rare...

... but I'd rather have a gun handy in case of an encounter like that, too.

I'd really hope not to have to use it, though, because I think wolves are quite cool.

Congratulations on that sighting, and the opportunity to get some photos most people will never get to take.

Cheers,

M

I am VERY fortunate to get that shot. I take a lot of nature photos and was hoping one day to get a shot on a wolf. I always thought that I would get it from a car. I do not agree with the majority in this part of the state that want to kill off our wolf population.

As others have said and I am sure you already know, wolves are smart as heck and they can run in packs.

Seeing one might mean you are facing many.

Glad you got the pics and everything turned out o.k.

Neat. The only wolf kills I've seen in my home state of AK have been salmon during their yearly run. They go for the bellies & leave the rest. Wolves always run away when they sense you, even if it's a pack of 'em. Wild dogs are another matter.

He didn't seem worried about me at all. He knew I was there all the time. I personally think that people are more of a threat that any animal. But, I wouldn't suggest walking up on any wild animal that is feeding.

"If only wolves were still common, beautiful creatures. Good pictures!"

They are common enough in Idaho, why don't you come and take some of the miserable animals home with you.

They are huge Alaska444, and I'm pretty sure they are why you don't see the elk herds along the Madison in Yellowstone Park like you use to. They are almost universely hated by the people that have to live around them.
