Why finger nail polish on nipples?

I saw an old documentory/ won't go into details about it but it showed a middle aged man firing a 58 rem and as he talked to the cameras and sound techs, he was using a small finger nail polish brush w the bottle in hand painting the nipples.
Was this finger nail polish?

Was this to seal them from coming off?

Was this to prevent cross firing?

Was this to improve the caps power?

I do not know

Yea, my first thought was this was a kinky thread about to catch mod wrath.

But there is another possible answer: On a well worn gun, it may help keep the cap from slipping off as easily...
Or it could just be a thinly veiled question...
 
I can see doing that for BP that you are goong to charge and store and then maybe use in inclimate weather. Some guys use a candle and dribble wax over the edges of the caps.
 
Could it be for keeping the caps on the nipples after they are fired?
I've seen caps fall off after being fired and jam the cylinder.
 
hartcreek is right. It's to seal the cylinder for long term storage. Moisture barrier. Same as some milsurp ammo is sealed at the primer and the projectile.
 
I know that when people reload cartridges they sometimes apply nail polish to the primer area. This acts like a sealant and insures water tightness.

Perhaps this was trying to be achieved here?

This seems to me like it would be a bad idea though. It would be a bugger to clean requiring paint stripper. Assuming it was actually nail polish.

Haven't a clue . . . was he using bight red lipstick to seal the chambers? :D:eek:

Maybe his own idea of waterproofing 'em but my question would be "why"? Especially if he was getting ready to demonstrate shooting it?

I've hunted rabbits and squirrels with a '51 Navy years ago in some pretty in some pretty snowy, dampish weather. Never had a problem with a proper fitting cap - they always went bang. In a holster where the cylinder is covered until withdrawn, there shouldn't be a problem.

As far as hot wax . . . maybe I've seen too many accidents but to me, mixing a flame anywhere near a C & B where there can be "spilled powder" residue isn't the brightest thing to do. To each their own though . . .
 
Ok there is a new doc called west of memphis trying to find who abducted 3 young boys in Arkansas--now they the original accused have been released due to new dna but one of the boy's father is now under suspicion. At that time those boys were found guilty. That man was on the first doc investigation mad and firing that gun w/FN plolish at a range into a watermillon. It was the doc investigation before these men were able to be released. The one before West of Memphis
 
There is a new documentary called "West Of Mississippi"

In the original documentary, those accused of the crime have been released based on new DNA evidence

The man firing the gun was in the first documentary, shooting watermelons
 
I will try---17 years ago 3 small boys were abucted and killed in Arkansas near Memphis. Three teenagers were accused tried and found guilty of the killings. The father or step father of one of those boys was the main focus of his anger and he was the one shooting that Rem w/polish into a watermellon while releasing anger over the murders---I do not remember that name of doc. But lately West of memphis came on and found that those teenagers were not guilty and set free and that man and his friend were considered as suspects due to their hair samples. Whether they were the guilty has not yet been proved---but the doc I am talking about is the one before when everyone -the teenagers were thought to be guilty but I would think you could find it from this info. West of Memphis does not show this gun.--It was a pevious doc about this. Google
