Why does Ruger use ulgy grips?

I'm mainly talking about their Single Actions.

If you take a look at Uberti,Cimarron, AWA, or Navy Arms you will see MUCH better looking grips.
The only Ruger grips that I've seen that I like are the black birdshead.
Anybody know why they use such cheap looking wood for their grips?

Their DA grips are ulgy also.:p

Why does Ruger use ulgy grips?

LETT Manufacturing has always made all Ruger's grips. The reason for such ugly grips is probably because they know you are going to put "RUBBER" on the guns.

That is my only 'knock' on Ruger. Their stock grips are not pretty. I put a set of Hogue's on my KP90, but I kept the stock "faux ivory" on my glossy SS Vaquero (Limited Edition Sheriff's Model .357

Rubber on a single action? YUCK!

The wood is not that bad, the finish is the problem. I have refinished several sets and they turn out very nice. I do wish Ruger would go back to walnut with a nice rubbed finish.

Beautiful Stag grips

I make really tough and good looking Duramite Nylon-Plastic blend Imatation Stag grips for cowboy shooters and even some policemen carry them on their duty weapons. Fitz grips were the best known replacement grips since 1924 but a severe injury made put my inventory into storage in 1979. I have dug them out now and check them out at fitz_grips@hotmail.com fitz_grips or search fitz pistol grips on Google and you may see a pair on a custom gunsmith's site.

My rose wood grips on my Blackhawk were so boring I refinished them. Didn't come out too bad once they were sanded to bare wood and refinished with tung oil... here is a pic;)

No, i took a piece of CLEAR packing tape, put it over the medallion, and cut around it with an exacto knife;)
This way, I could see if I was sanding too close for comfort and scuffing the medallion.:D

The ones that came on the Bisley Single Six I picked up Monday are actually finished quite nicely. I was surprised, after reading some of the comments here and in the past. I may put a coat or 3 of linseed oil on them anyway, though.

Saw some really nice custom oversize rosewood grips with finger grooves (for Bisley grip frames) on Gunbroker last week for $45, but alas, can't find them any more.

I agree they are ugly, but always thought the grips on the single action Rugers were created to match what they would normally look like.

You don't see many old revolvers with rubber finger grips as you would with more mordern revolvers.

Why ugly and uncomfortable grips? Because it's a Ruger trademark. Everyone knows the first thing you do is remove and replace them.:p

grips

Sorry, but I need my wheelgun for shooting and for this reason Ruger grips are very functionally..
I think a gun is a tool for shooting..
