Why do you sell a gun

Hey y'all been wondering this for a while then read a thread today about buying back the same gun you sold before and saw several people do that and then still sell em again.

This question excludes - selling it to put food on the table

I personally am very happy with all of my firearms, I usually spend a good deal of time debating on guns. Maybe I've just gotten lucky with my buys. But I can't see selling one to fund another purchase or because I got bored with it...
 
I also do it to fund others. I may buy one, then see another that just came out in the same caliber with better features.

Throughout my gun years, there have been many reasons to sell my guns. The first was prior to my going into the Navy and knew I would be gone for a few years. I did not trust them to be left without some protection. .... ;)

Lately I have been selling some that I no longer shoot and they should go to a better home. I also do not want my spouse to be saddled with trying to liquidate them after I'm gone. If it was up to her, she would keep them all but she is an exception. I've had many gun-buddies move on and have helped their widows get out from under guns, ammo and accessaries. .... :mad:

Oh yes, to make room in my safe for my new purchase. ... ... ;)

Sometimes regardless of how much research you do occasionally you’ll end up with a gun that just doesn’t work for you. It may be the way it performs, fits your hand or you just dislike it. This has only happened to me once, but in that case I traded the gun, took the loss and moved on.
 
My guns are tools, not toys. Don't get me wrong, I love shooting, but I don't view my firearms ownership as a hobby.

I buy guns with a specific purspose in mind. I've set a list of needs and have been purchasing guns for awhile to fill those needs.

BOB/Truck Gun
Medium Range center-fire Semi-Automatic Rifle
Long Range bolt action medium caliber Rifle
Semi-auto tactical shotgun

.308 bolt... probably Remington 700, although I'd really like something with a larger capacity mag... M14 would be the beast (and semi-auto), but $1000 firearms are just not cost-effective for me no matter how cool they are.
S&W 686 .357mag
etc...

I'd actually like doubles of every gun, and will get there eventually. Every firearm has a specific purpose. I try to choose guns that just about anybody can use with very little training. I try to choose common calibers, and will probably include a .40 and .45 pistol to my list in the future.

I am planning on selling my Keltec PF9 because I like the S&W Shield better. Funds are always a consideration, and I don't need 2 compact semi-autos specifically for SD. As soon as the S&W's are back in stock and reasonably prices, I'll sell/trade the Keltec.
 
I try not to get overly attached to things. People, yes. My dogs and horses, sure. Guns, my truck, etc... not so much. They are only things.
 
I sold my Mini 30 so I could afford a micro desert eagle for concealed carry when I first got my permit. I put maybe 80 rounds through it in over a 4 year period so I figured it needed to go. I hunt in a shotgun only zone anyway so I did not need a rifle. I sold a mossberg 410 pump so I could buy gas to get to work and back as I get paid every two weeks and was short. This was another gun I never used and had no real attachment to. Thoughs are the only guns I will ever sell as all of my other guns have meaning to me that cash couldn't offset. The Mini 30 took a few days of consideration before I could let it go, not so much for the 410.
 
I used to be someone who never sold any firearms once I purchased them.

I realized one day that I just really had no use for some of my purchases of over 20 years.
So, I sold those and funded the purchases of a few more which fit me much better.
 
Some guys seem to have this irrational emotional attachment to their guns. I bought the thing to use, I didn't marry it. If I find something I like better I trade up. I buy 99% of my guns used and consider resale value before I buy. If I don't think I will be able to sell or trade up without losing money I usually pass. I won't say I've always come out ahead, but much more often than not I do. When I was younger I made a few mistakes and let emotion have too much influence on some decisions.

I often come across folks selling guns at bargain prices so they can pay the rent. I've bought several that I never shot or even bought ammo for because I knew I was only going to use it as trade bait for something I did want.

I've never earned a huge amount of money, but by purchasing what I could afford and later selling at a profit, I've been able to eventually trade up into several pretty nice guns that I would have to save up for years to afford otherwise.

Here is a good example. Eight or 9 years ago I bought a Colt 1911 from a guy desparate for rent money for $250. Two years ago I found a lightly used Winchester Extreme Weather in a gunshop about an hour from home for $700. I gave the guy $100 to hold it and told him I'd be back in a week to pay it off. Took the Colt to my LGS and put it up on consignment. I didn't even get home before they called me to come back and get my $600. Which I used to pay off the rifle. I'm out of pocket $350 for a gun that sells new for over $1,000.

I looked around on internet gun forums until I found a used McMIllan stock which I bought for $400 instead of the normal $600. Sold my factory stock for $150. I used Cabelas bucks along with a $75 off coupon from Cabelas and have $75 in a $400 scope.

By being willing to trade and sell guns and accessories I have $675 invested in a $1,000 rifle, $600 stock and a $400 scope. That is one of my better trades, but I buy most of my guns in a similar fashion.
 
When it doesn't bring me any joy,,,

Some of my guns bring me joy just by living in my cabinet,,,
I bring them out occasionally and fond,,, eerr,,, oil them,,,
Others bring me enjoyment only as shooters.

When a gun no longer satisfies at least one of the above purposes,,,
I feel no qualms about selling the gun off,,,
Or sometimes gifting it to someone.

The only guns I have ever regretted selling,,,
Were guns I had to sell to make the mortgage payment.

There's a German made Drilling floating out there somewhere,,,
A Christmas gift from my parents in 1965?,,,
I truly miss owning that fine firearm.

Guess I'm the odd ball here because I've never sold a firearm. I have traded up on occasion but never sold one for any reason. The ones that I have I really like and I don't want to part with them unless I had to.
 
I had a Winchester .243 that my dad bought me in high school. Sold it to a friend. Man, I wish I had that gun back!

I owned a S&W .357 (can't remember the model), it was real old and very cool. Sold it to a guy working construction. Man, I wish I had that gun back!

The first handgun i ever purchased with my own cash was a Ruger P89. Sold it to raise cash for a fly rod. Man, I wish I had that gun back!

I owned a Colt commander and couldn't get it to work with cheap ammo so I sold it. Now I handload and would love to work on a load that makes it shine. Man, I wish I had that gun back!

I owned a Springfield 1911 that I paid $200.00 for. I gave it to a friend in the National Guard when he was deployed to Iraq. Man, I'm glad I gave him that gun!

I don't sell guns anymore, I always seem to want them back (except for the Springfield, Steve will allways remember it as my thankyou for his sacrifice!).
 
I'm currently paring down my collection to guns that I actually shoot often, and selling duplicate types.

I've also sold firearms because they just didn't fit me, or didn't run up to my expectations.
And I've sold guns to fund an upgrade to another gun
 
I've had to sell almost all of my guns twice in three years. It was to fund moving from one state to another for work. I wish I could have taken them with me... but I took the wife instead...
 
I live paycheck to paycheck and can't afford to just straight out buy a new gun everytime something new comes out I wanna try so I'll sell one or trade one off for it. It's a way for me to try a bunch of different firearms without going completely broke all the time.
 
Out of bordom. I get bord with some guns, sell them and buy different ones that I find more intriguing at the time.
