why do you buy so many???

Is this a sickness that just some men get, that causes them to buy buy buy every gun they see?? Why is it that no matter what the financial situation is, there is still enough money for a gun, for either a payment on one or a payment on a loan for one?? I'm just a wife that wonders if there are others like myself that are losing their mind over their husbands obsession?

Yes, it is a sickness.

As a man, I can tell you that when youth fades and young women call us "Sir", we fall prey to running around with a variety of firearms. We know to do so amongst the feminine side of humanity would immediately subject us to the use of wifely force, with extreme prejudice. Just view it as a technique that we use to stay loyal and true to our lovely and understanding wives.

Interesting, my mom was a user and collector of primarily shotguns but she had a few rifles and maby only half a dozen handguns. My daughter, 40s, has and enjoys more than absolutely necessary. My sons, of course, are totaly out of control.
Sam...I may be old but at least I'm lost.

I guess I will be one of the first to try to answer this. Since I can't get my own wife to understand I don't know how well I'm going to convince you :)
It's a hobby like anything else,Some guys are into cars, motorbikes, motorboats etc. Guns are just another entry into the black hole in which we dump money. I enjoy shooting and collecting. Each gun shall I say has it's own personality and some will shoot better then others. Some guns are just plain prettier then others.
My wife finds the same distaste with my hobby,I can't figure out why. When push comes to shove if I have to I can always get my money invested out of my collection. She on the otherhand collects Boyd's Bears which in some cases aren't very cheap either but I don't have a problem with that. All they do is sit there and look stuffed, a gun is a tool and can be used as such or it can just be admired for what it is.
When I buy a new gun I've saved for it and it don't take money from the family .
Why else do I go to work for if I cannot enjoy the fruits of my labor.
Hope this helps

I usually answer this question from wife with a question.. Why do you need so many pairs of shoes and purses?

Seriously though, it's a hobby with me and I enjoy shooting to keep my skills up in case I ever need to use a weapon for self/family or property defense.

I think we tend to buy on impulse at times much like what is done in any other hobby. We also may be looking for a better weapon than what we already have or have something to compare it to. We also may have a need for a different weapon for a different task, ie hunting, plinking, target shooting etc etc...

Ditto Bandit. I was wondering how long it would be before that popped up!! :D I also like the "Why do you spend 50.00 on a Permanent (perm) when it's not permanent?"
Sorry. Don't mean to be crass. You think this is expensive. Don't let him get involved in competitive archery!!! The arrows are 100.00 a dozen anymore!!! And believe me, they don't last very long either. Just be glad it's not booze or women the money is going for!!

I just got back from the Mall with my wife. I think turnabout is fairplay. Because we love them so much and want them to be happy! We take turns busting the budget. Life is short, so get out there and buy something you want! :)

Kinda makes it tough to set priorities... One good thing about a wife that's not into guns, they all look pretty much the same to her. Which makes it easier to sneak another one into the house.

While not a cheap hobbie by any means, at least guns do hold their value pretty well, I've never taken much of a bath when I had to sell. Compared to most hobbies (snowmobiling, motorcycling, booze and women :)) this one is fairly benign and affordable. GOtta start reloading so the ammo cost doesn't put me in the poor house though. The wife hasn't figured out how much that portion of the sport is costing. Actually less than as fuel costs for the trucks, go figure. Probably less than the wifes health club membership as well.

I've gotta quite spending so much time here at TFL, thats getting me in more trouble than the guns.

Being a shooter is still a cheaper addiction than drugs and much healthier.

PS Do not take this statement to mean I was ever an illegal drug user, I never inhaled either.

I am the wife of mattfra. He is a gun fanatic, like your husband. However, I decided to get involved with this hobby to keep peace and spend more time with him. Therefore, I read his gun magazines, go to the range with him and even listen to his endless ideas, complaints, and mostly excitement concerning any and all gun issues. As a result, I have become a gun enthusiast too. (And the fun we have together far exceeds the arguments we would have had if I had not gotten involved!)

Hey wife of MATTFRA. You got a sister??? :) :)

I don't know about other people, but a reasonable number of my guns were purchased because my trusting government doesn't want me to have such weapons. I figure that anything they don't want me to have is a must buy. :)

IMHO, gun enthusiasts are much the same as other hobbyists and collectors: a hobby is a creative, educational, and skilled use of leisure time, and collecting is a passion. Hobbies (be they guns or bird watching) and collecting (whether the subject is guns or rare books) are, in moderation, wholesome activities that deserve respect.

In terms of intraspousal harmony, my wife is not particularly interested in guns. But she doesn't have a problem with my buying guns, because she knows I enjoy them. Basically, she accepts me as a package deal, guns and all. But she also knows I'll never spend so much money on guns that I won't be able to pay the household bills on time.

Now, if I paid more attention to my guns than to my marriage, or if I bought a Colt instead of making the mortgage payment, my interest in guns would cease to be a healthful activity, and the same can be said of hobbies and collecting in any field. Unfortunately, anything, however good in itself, can be abused. In such a case, guns are not the issue. Abuse is the issue.

Just my $0.02. :)

Why do some women have so many shoes and pocketbooks? Imelda Marcos had what, 3,000 pair of shoes? :)

I don't know. Fat, unattentive domineering wives who must live their lives through their husbands maybe?
Would you rather they drink, get DUIs, chase other women, gamble? There are worse things.

Personally, my wife would buy about any gun I wanted as a gift, FWIW (probably 0)

As men mature, our tastes run to fine, sleek, fast things. Some go to cars. Some go to younger, thiner women. Some fine firearms. Don't care much for the first. The second would be causing ME to be dodging bullets. I went to custom 1911s. Much cheaper than alimony. :D

Gunbuyerswife: I actually had to check your profile, just to see if you were my wife typing in! (You're not...whew!) :) TFL is just like Alcoholics Anonymous, except that the addiction is different, and we actually ENCOURAGE each other to indulge in our habit.

OK, seriously. This nation is at a poin that it has never been before. The last time Americans were in this state of lost human rights was when we were all Brits (not including slaves, who were disarmed so that they couldn't fight back). We're almost back to where we were with the Brits, and your husband, like the rest of us, see it coming. It's better to get everything you can now before the supply's totally dried up. That's one reason. Have I bought more guns in the last year than I had for the last 20 years of my life? You bet! Have I bought more guns because of an overbearing government? You bet! There are many, many more reasons to buy firearms based upon rights and personal protection reasons, but I'll keep my post short. (too late)

Next reason. Men are materialistic, just like women, but about different things. No matter what you say, you're materialistic, too. You just have your own wants. The materialism coupled with the real and ever-present fear of more 2nd ammendment trampling offer a mental urge to arm one's self to the teeth. That's why. Am I armed to the teeth? You bet. Our forefathers wanted every man over 16 to have the same type of weapons that the military did, so that no matter what, we the people could defend ourselves from both foreign and DOMESTIC armies. That right is being taken away. Every family in Switzerland has a full auto rifle and the men in the family are required to practice with it. Switzerland is a neutral country, but ther fear no other government. Hitler intentionally bypassed Switzerland in WWII because he knew he'd be torn to shreads. I'm getting way off topic. I think you get my point by now...your husband can see into the future.

Cindy, I buy them because I can. Have you ever heard of collecting? That's where you buy things because you enjoy the thought of HAVING them. Unlike teacups, salt shakers, thimbles, etc... We actually get to USE our guns for something. What about baseball cards, stamps, etc? Is there anything wrong with collecting them?

I always tell my wife that if we need the money, I will sell a gun. Unlike Jewelery (1000% standard markup), guns hold their value and often make a profit when sold. They do not 'break' and rearly wear out. They are fine mechanisms that fascinate the masculine mind. Do you have male childern? Do any of them happen to be fascinated with cars, planes, tractors, etc? There is an inbred desire to control mechanisms... an insatiable curiosity that unites us all as men.

Women have the same fascination with emotions, relationships, physical beauty, and stability. These are inbred desires they often satisfy by buying romance novels, clothes, makeup, and breast enlargement surgury. How long does a man spend 'doing his hair?'

Bottom line: At least it's guns and not prostitutes or porn!!!
