Why do I shoot better with a cheap gun?

I don't get it. My cheap NEF 410 shoots better for me than any other gun I've tried, including expensive o/u and sxs and pump guns.

To further reinforce things I hit every clay flung out at a party recently with a 20ga NEF someone loaned me. They actually asked if I would 'step back' and let others try and hit as I was picking them off too much.

But I don't want to be stuck with a single shot. I really like those coach guns but they didn't shoot well for me. I do better with pump guns than o/u too.

What gives? :confused:
 
No idea... I have the same deal though. Broke nearly every clay I pointed at with a 20 ga. youth NEF... couldn't hit squat with the 12 ga. 870 that I tried later. Barely hit anything with a 12 ga. mossy 500 either. Perhaps part of it is comfort with the gun... I've had that NEF since seventh grade... the other two I'd just seen that morning.
 
The cheap shotgun fits you better. You need a shotgun that has the correct length of pull, and drop in comb, one that fits you, to be accurate. Some guys even need to have the stock canted to the right or left so they hit better. When the drop in comb or the length of pull is incorrect it affects your mount. Well to make it short when the gun fits, your eye lines up with the bore, so you shoot where you look. If the gun doesn't fit well, you will change your sight allignment every time you mount the gun. So, different sight picture = different point of impact, each time you fire. Maybe someone else will explain it better. I hope you get my jist.
 
It was explained to me that, with shotguns, one's eye is the "rear sight". If the gun's fit doesn't put your eye where it belongs, POI wanders off into the night.

However, and it's a big "however", it's possible to adjust to a particular gun even if the fit isn't that hot.

Through the magic of sig(nature) lines, we learn that you own a NEF Partner in .410. One infers that you shoot it more than something that doesn't occur in the sig line. If such is the case, it might not be that there's anything "magic" about the NEF apart from practice and adaptation.

We always shoot what we own and practice with better than something we shoot less often.
 
Word, fit is the key. I'm not a big guy, and I hit more & better with my dad's little 20 guage browning than I do with a beretta 12 ga 303
 
Not only do I shoot best with a cheap gun, but I shoot even better with a cheap gun with an 18.5in. barrel! The thing is, I stater shooting with a full-size mossy 500, and now I use a mossberg persuader.

We all have our quirks.
 
The price of the gun doensn't matter. Standard stock on a new shotgun is 14". That's too long for me. Chances are that a shotgun that's been around awhile has been fixed to fit the shooter, and the shorter stock probably benefits you too. Check the stock length and drop at heel and comb on any shotgun that you shoot well. Take notes.
