Why did I get a "delay?!"

Yesterday, I went to pick up my rifle that I had ordered. I filled out that yellow sheet, they called it in, and I was put on delay. The rifle is a Ruger #1 .458. Now, I have never been convicted or arrested. I haven't even been pulled over!! :) Why was I put on delay?? I am only 18...but hey, that's the legal age! So what is going on here??

Probably the dealer called you in during lunch. Or the droids were in the middle of a major game of Hearts.

Naw, I'm not just a wee bit torqued about NICS...

I've never had an "instant check" go through instantly (3 handguns and a shotgun). OTOH they've always called back within 10 minutes and said go ahead. I've learned to hang around the shop for a while.

Never been delayed but I asked the dealers who does.

People with hispanic names.
People with "other" for 'Race' on driver's license
Some cops

I don't fit any of those catagories. What I do have is a common name. I have wondered if I went ahead and gave them the ss number if they would go through right away or not. A couple of dealers told me that there is no consistency as to why some are delayed and others are not and that the ss number doesn't appear to make a difference. It wouldn't irritate me so bad if I hadn't just waited 7 days while the local Sheriff's office did their thing.

My first, middle, and last names are common to be together. I did put my SS on the form. I am not in any of those three groups that Oleg listed. Hmmm.

Ever since NICS went into effect I've been delayed every time. Shortest time was 5 minutes, longest 3 days. Common names take a while, as well as when they're busy, or takin' a nap, or like Coinneach said, playin' cards, pickin' their nose, or whatever. ;)
I wouldn't worry too much.

Ok...what is NICS -- give me all the info you can. I have never heard of it before now. Who are they and *why* are they? Thanks everyone!!

Maybe you guys are accidently putting down your online handle instead of your real name? ;)

Seriously though, if you live in the Midwest and have parts or all of the following in your name, expect a delay.
Anderson, Johannsen, Carlson, Jenson, Thorson, Torkelson, Gustofson......
Okay, basically, if it is Scandihoovian you'll get delayed.
One of the rural Sheriff's just tried to get a gun through our store, and got delayed.
He was a bit ticked off, but not too bad.

Or, on Saturdays the NICS office is incredibly busy, and sometimes I've heard that if the system is busy when they say "Please wait for the results of the check" the computer automatically spits back a "DELAY". In those cases we often get a phone call from NICS ten minutes later with a "PROCEED".
Then, a younger salesman is sent running down the gravel road after the disgusted customer's truck.
Sometimes we actually catch them!

Hueco, NICS is the All-Knowing All-Seeing National Instant (sic) Check System. It's the database which determines whether you may or may not exercise your RKBA.

Of course, in your case, you can only exercise *part* of your RKBA, since the Feds say you can't be trusted with a pistol until you turn 21.

Yes, true -- I am only entitled to part of it. Come my 21st b-day though...I plan on excersizing it.
