Why Caspian?

I don't know much about them other than they're pretty! Why Caspian Arms? What makes Caspian more desirable than any other part vendor, other than personal preference?

They make decent parts (i.e., they actually FIT) at a very good price. The only way to get frames and slides that are cheaper is to go with brands that have their holes all drilled in the wrong place. Caspian is the cheapest brand I'd trust to build a decent 1911 from.

I like the Caspian frames & slides because of the fit and finish, the weight and the look. Plus, the ones I've used have bee very nice shooters....but WOW pretty pricey & non-existent in CA.

The fit.

My Caspian Officer's ACP had to have the slide and frame lapped together, not because they cut corners on quality control, but because they want to make certain every gun built on their parts works properly when assembled by a qualified 1911-smith.;)

I bought one of their 'blemish' frames

under their other "Foster Industries" name. I'll say this, the holes were all right, which is thee part of a frame you can't fix if it's not done right the first time.;)

Good Question

I asked myself the same question and decided it was due to consistent quality coupled with the ability to get exactly what I wanted in a 1911A1 style handgun.

Their frames and slides are arguably the best there is. The other parts they make are suppsoed to be good too, but most people mix-n-match the other bits on their custom gun anyway.

What is the best frame to use, in California, where my options are ONLY Colt 1991 S80, SA MilSpec, SA Loaded and Kimber Custom?

I'd say it's the Kimber. Folks complain (often rightly) about certian aspects of the Kimbers, but it's never about the frames. Top notch.

It really depends on who you ask. I have asked a few smiths and have decided that you use the frame & slide that your smith is best at working on. I wouldn't use a Kimber as my base gun only because they are sooo expensive, even for a base model. Personally, I like having the pony, so I went Colt.

Both the frames and slides of the Kimbers (even the most basic models) are extremely high quality, they are made at the same plant as the Wilson Combat slides & frames. People have some problems with the small MIM parts Kimber uses to keep their costs down sometimes, but the frames, slides and barrels are all top-notch. If I was going to have a full-on custom gun made and couldn't use a Caspian frame, I'd start with a basic Kimber Custom (as low as $600 from what I've seen) and keep the slide/frame/barrel... then replace the other internals & other goodies with top-shelf stuff. As long as there isn't some gross defect, the slide/frame combo won't have much of an impact on performance... stuff like the barrel quality, barrel-to-slide fit, and good quality "guts" installed properly are 99% of the game.

Actually what I'm talking about frame & Caspian Slide compatibility, is will a Kimber frame, which has that firing pin block, work with a Caspian slide? How about a Colt Series 80 frame?

sigh........no Caspian for PRK.

Checking around either SA Mil-spec or Kimber seem to be the consensus for custom work.

I've shot a couple of Colt frame/ Caspian slide guns...very nice :) But at this point in my collection, I'd wonder why you would do that. I would just customize a simple 1991a1.

WHY I CHOOSE CASPIAN

Best.

(Ask Wilson.)

And.....they allow me the option for my personal serial number, and offer me options like front strap checkering, and material, and other good stuff.

Oh, and they're local and they are EXTREMELY strong supporters of our rights and sports.
