Why cant we use ammo made by the Israelis?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Israeli-made bullets bought by the U.S. Army to plug a shortfall should be used for training only, not to fight Muslim guerrillas in Iraq and Afghanistan, U.S. lawmakers told Army generals on Thursday.
Since the Army has other stockpiled ammunition, "by no means, under any circumstances should a round (from Israel) be utilized," said Rep. Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii, the top Democrat on a House of Representatives Armed Services subcommittee with jurisdiction over land forces.

The Army contracted with Israel Military Industries Ltd. in December for $70 million in small-caliber ammunition.

The Israeli firm was one of only two worldwide that could meet U.S. technical specifications and delivery needs, said Brig. Gen. Paul Izzo, the Army's program executive officer for ammunition. The other was East Alton, Illinois-based Winchester Ammunition, which also received a $70 million contract.

Although the Army should not have to worry about "political correctness," Abercrombie was making a valid point about the propaganda pitfalls of using Israeli rounds in the U.S.-declared war on terror, said Rep. Curt Weldon, the Pennsylvania Republican who chairs the subcommittee on tactical air and land forces.

"There's a sensitivity that I think all of us recognize," Weldon told the Army witnesses, including Maj. Gen. Buford Blount, who led the U.S. Third Infantry Division that captured Baghdad in April 2003.

Blount, now the Army's assistant deputy chief of staff, said the Army had sufficient small caliber ammunition -- 5.56mm, 7.62mm and .50 caliber -- to conduct current operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

But taken together with training needs, the United States had strained its production facilities, he testified.

"To fight a major combat operation in another theater will require the Army to impose restrictions on training expenditures and to focus current inventory and new production on combat operations," Blount said.

As a result, he said the Army hoped to stretch U.S. supplies to supplement the capacity of the government-owned Lake City plant in Independence, Missouri, that currently makes more than 90 percent of U.S. small caliber ammunition.

The Lake City factory, operated by Alliant Techsystems Inc., has nearly quadrupled its production in the past four years. This year, it will produce more than 1.2 billion rounds, Karen Davies, president of the ATK arm that runs it, told the panel. Lake City provided more than 2 billion rounds a year during World War II and Vietnam, she said.

The Army's needs will grow to about 1.5 billion to 1.7 billion rounds a year in coming years, Blount said.

"In the near-term, balancing training requirements with current operational needs is a manageable risk-mitigation strategy," he said.

The Army does not want to repeat its history of building capacity during wartime "only to dismantle it in peacetime," Blount added.

Following that logic we should stop selling the Alaska pipeline oil to the Far East, and stop using middle east oil.

We as a nation, with this BS, is no more.

Long live Canada maybe? I don't know but America and it's PC'ness is going down the tubes :(.

I can see why we may not want to leave little brass calling cards with "IMI" stamped on it in the middle east. If it becomes popularly known that Israeli troops had been in these countries (even if it is a mistake because of the brass), popular support from the Muslim countries we are allied with would evaporate overnight.

This isn't "PC" anything - Israeli ammo killing Arabs is NOT going to go down well with anybody Muslim.

And before anyone gets spooled up with the "who cares what they think", try and remember that we aren't actually at war with the entire middle east. I know, hard to imagine.

Anyone told them that yet, since I seem to remember pretty much all those countries celebrating when we got hit on 9/11.

I don't really care what rounds we use to plug terrorists. For all I care, they can be made by Israelis, coated in pig fat, and be called the "martyrmakers".

As long as they get the job done, put the terrorists down, and help our soldiers do their job, I am all for it.

I.G.B. <---- Not very politically correct.

I don't know why we have to patronize foreign businesses with our public purse to begin with. Our own businesses at home ought to be getting government contracts like these.

They did. Remember the POJ American Ammunition? American manufacturer in Miami, FL. They have a GSA purchasing contract. The USA has even given them a past contract award for ammunition. I dare say Israel built better product, faster delivery and US-Israei relations are amiable. We could help out Brazil and purchase from them. In a pinch, we could simply buy S&B. They are part of the good guys now.

I am reminded of what Senator Lieberman said about the original Gitmo controversy.

He told some reporter "Please try to remember, we are at war"

I don't know what bothers me more...the Political Correctness Police, or the fact that these people have so much time on their hands that they can think of this garbage.

Giving in to this kind of garbage certainly does not advance efforts to raise the maturity level of the controversy.

What is next....no Jewish combat troops allowed?

Similiar to a hate crime huh, I don't believe anything we so will
"go down well" with the Muslim's, time to stop the worry about
such nonsense, (be kind to people and animals when possible but
carry a big stick.) Just my old opinion but it's time we become a
country once again and not a bunch of little girls running around
worrying about who we offend, that is if we wish to survive.

We are ALLIES with the Saudis, Kuwaitis, Pakistan, Bahrain, Qatar and others. We are trying to fix the Palestine/Israel problem. Importing Israeli gifts into this area is going to undo all that.

Despite being typical Americans, try and learn something from history. The "War on Terrorism" is a hearts and minds war, where we convince the world that terrorism is misguided, unnecessary and unprofitable. If we try to Lyndon Johnson the problem and fight all out, we'll get exactly what we got out of Vietnam.

Actually, I'm all for avoiding Israeli ammo, for their reasons, and to keep US ammunition production up.

The reason that they're citing is actually a legit one, whether we like it or not. It sounds crazy, but our nation actually creates more enemies when its soldiers shoot enemies (who happen to be Muslim) with Isreali bullets than if it shot the same enemies (who happen to be Muslim) with US military ammo. If our goal is to actually try to stop terrorism, than such subtleties should be addressed.

Consider the trouble that the Brits found in the Indian Mutiny of 1857, in which the British gave their indiginous soldiers paper cartridges with animal grease to be smeared over them before they were bitten by the solder. The Hindus revolted that it might be cow grease, and the Muslims revolted that it might be pig grease. While the British army responded with vegetable grease, the damage was done.

this is *THE* fundemental reason why the US hasn't won a real war since WorldWar TWO.

We worry more about the crying pansy ass liberals, than we do about letting our soldiers be *SOLDIERS*!

I'd like to mention that the pig-blood story of Pershing, while popular with keyboard commandos, is complete and utter bung.
