Why are we complaining about Bill H.R.1022?

This is my first post. ever. I've been reading quite a bit about this bill(H.R.1022), Jim Zumbo's take on EBR's, and just the response from the general public. And I pose a simple series of questions.

1. What exactly does the 2nd Amendment provide us?
and
2. How long are we going to take the oppressive laws pushed on us under the guise of Public Safety?

Basically I want answers from the folks on here, and also suggestions on what to do about it. It's become more and more obvious that Politicians no longer fight for what we want. They do whatever they want so long as it suits their political agenda.

When and where do we put our foot down, and fight? Your senator isn't going to do it for you. Not with a Dimocratic run congress. How about the president? Surely you jest.

Gun owners all over the net getting electronically mobilized in this fight for gun rights, but what if its not enough? It hasn't been yet. For every win we achieve, the brady bunch, and left wing nuts trample our rights with 2 wins of their own. It's like gasoline prices, people. Raise it 3 cents, drop it 2. Raise it 3 more, drop it 2 more, etc, etc. Then, when prices become stable, we all get happy for a bit. Then they hit us again. Little by little.

Think of the Gun control issue as "Whittling"
Consider gun owners the small piece of wood, the courts the knife, and the left wingers as the old man. Slowly but surely, we will shaved thin, just a little piece at a time. After awhile, there won't be anything left.

Let's put a stop to it. The way I figure it, there are a lot of EBR's laying around in closets in this great nation. We all have them for a purpose. Do we wait till the Fed's come to take them from us, or do we wait till their banned from our possesion? It's time for us to decide...

I am a member of the NRA. But all these groups are only winning on certain fronts. The AWB of 1994 is testament to that.

And here's the visual of why we are fighting this thing. Oleg Volk's work, of course.

The above was the bad news, which is what we're fighting against right now.

Here's the good news, what we've accomplished in the past couple of decades. From http://www.gun-nuttery.com/rtc.php

If we are willing to work at it, there is NOTHING we cannot do. There are more of "us" than there are of "them." Don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

Our 2nd Amendment rights have been removed from us. Many of our fold has been duped into the straw man arguments the anti's have been circulating. The Feds controlling ANY firearms is ILLEGAL under the Constitution.

We argue about "sporting purpose;" the legitimacy of various arms for "hunting and target-shooting." The whole point of the 2nd Amendment guaranteeing our rights was to keep us on equal footing with the people who are now "in charge" of telling us what arms are ok for us commoners to have.

The 2nd was taken from us long ago, and nothing short of a revolution or the states standing up to the feds will get it back. Does anyone really think that the bank robber will approve of the teller having a gun while the robbery is going on?

"Why yes Mr. Teller, of course you have have a gun so you can stop me from robbing you." Sound insane? The government thinks so too . . . . . .

House Bill 1022

The assinine audacity of another left winger in the House of Representatives to again attempt to render most of all we have in the way of firearms and the sports of hunting and marksmanship,or just plinking, and actually self defense is utterly ridiculous and uncalled for. Let up hope that this bill is nipped in the bud, never to come to the floor even for a House vote.

Please write, call, or contact your Congressman/Congress person and tell them to send HB1022 to the wastebasket.

Some of the folks in this great Country, displeased with the President, the War, and/or his handling of the War voted for change, but I really don't believe this anti-gun bill and the the propaganda involved in anti-gun bills
were the intent of the vote of the good thinking American Public. Let them know you won't put of with the same old worn out lies.

Pax,
That is probably the best visual aid I've seen on this site!
Thanks.

NukeCop,
A lot of us generally feel the same way as you do. The previous posters basically sum up what my input would be.

Of all of those activities, writing your congressman, etc, I think the single most important thing we can do is VOTE. That is the ONLY way to get them out. Advocate your cause and get a group together to hold each other accountable to vote every time the booths are open. Not just the presidential elections, I mean each and every primary, etc.

Welcome to TFL. Hope your stay is a long one and I'm looking forward to your future comments and opinions.

NukeCop wisely inquired:
1. What exactly does the 2nd Amendment provide us?

and

2. How long are we going to take the oppressive laws pushed on us under the guise of Public Safety?

NC, to respond directly to your first question - it seems more and more that the 2nd Amendment provides us with precisely what we're willing to fight for in the halls of our state legislatures, Congress, and SCOTUS, and NO MORE!

IF we all roll over and play dead, the 2nd becomes absolutely meaningless, as there will BE no private ownership of guns and the State will have the unchallenged monopoly on guns.

The second question is rhetorical in nature, not in the sense that it has no value, but in the sense of Socratic discussion where it's intended to provoke reasoned thought. For that alone I thank you.

For myself, I belong to the NRA. Note that I don't agree with everything they do, nor even every opinion they espouse; rather, I see them as a force multiplier. The NRA has far more resources to bring to bear on those issues I DO care about than I can muster on my own, and that makes them worth the price of my dues.

Another thing I do is write my elected officials - regularly. I've heard (which means I can't prove it, but it sounds good) that each letter received by an elected official represents approximately 1000 votes. So I write letters, and hope the GGBs (that's Gun Grabbing Bastards - remember, you hard it here first) are all too busy protesting fur coats and non-recyclable baby wipes to bother to write opposing my position. (OK, that's a cheap shot - but you get my drift)

I'm also going to my state capitol Tuesday to show up in person to express my disapproval of a newly resurrected Assault Weapon Ban. And I wrote my Congressman to let him know that (a) I was doing it, and (b) as Washington is closer to my home than Annapolis, I'd have no problem showing up on his doorstep too.

The other thing I do is practice and join the Revolutionary War Veteran's Association. Start out here http://rwva.blogspot.com/, read some/a lot/all of the columns, and decide for yourself if it's something you're interested in. I did, and I joined. I've also attended one of the functions (with my wife), and we both had a great time. The RVWA is good people with a real sense that something's wrong, and it shouldn't be taken sitting down.

It sounds like you've taken the big, first step - you're finally pi**ed off. Congratulations.

All the best,
Rob

To OG, i agree with you. I've already written my congressman, but I doubt it'll do much good. Kinda like the first time. The RWVA is deff. a good idea, and I follow the columns in Shotgun News. I'd love to attend a shoot sometime, just gotta get away from the military. But back to fighting them. I'm all for fighting them in the courts, and capitol hill. And I'll go so far as to say that when they come to take them away from us, should it come to that, I'll fight them in my front yard too. I'm sick of fighting for a country that only desecrates the constitution, and our bill of rights. I want to know how much we're going to take before we step back and truly use the 2nd amendment for what its for.

The Feds controlling ANY firearms is ILLEGAL under the Constitution.

I love my guns as much as the next guy, but that argument and $.05 will get you a cup of coffee.

There are constraints to the first amendment, and all of the rest. There always have been. To assume that the 2nd is the only enumerated right in the constitution that is limitless is both legally incorrect, and probably historically as well.

I have to agree on the advice of writing your representitives. A couple of thousand letters (E-Mails) can sway anyones opinion. A couple thousand votes can swing an election. A fact not lost on the folks in D.C. as every year seems to be an election year. Join the NRA and a statewide organization There's power in numbers.
