Why a choke on the KSG?

I know that KSG is working on a quick-change choke to go on the KSG. I am assumming they are doing this because enough people at the shot show asked for it.

Was it to incorporate breach and spreader chokes?
 
Possibly, though more likely because folks may want to tailor spread with load and distance as parameters.
 
IMHO, for a MIL/LE type weapon, changeable chokes are just something else to go wrong. I don't like the idea of using a bull-pup for breaching, either. What chokes were the people at the shot show requesting?

pardon the hijack, but why? i would think that small size makes bullpups actually a better option for breaching.

and to answer the OP, kel tec isnt actually making this a normal feature. if you want, there is an optional "choke adapter" you can buy. you then have to "remove the muzzle nut" (i have no idea what that means, i assume its just a cover to protect the barrel threads) and then screw on the choke adapter. this will increase length buy a couple inches.

so, with that in mind, i doubt it was for special LE chokes. it was probably because a couple guys at SHOT commented, "hey, it sure would be great to take this thing on the field. wish it had some chokes."

they do have standing when they say this; it is lighter and would be easier to carry and faster to shoulder on, say, a quail hunt. but that is another section of the forum :D

Doesn't putting the operator closer the the obstacle make him more venerable? It would seem that your safety increases with the square of the distance from the breached object. By shortening the gun by just 30%, you double your chance of injury.
 
When I first heard the request for chokes I thought it was absurd. But then I thought about dispersion chokes and a breach choke. This is a SD/HD shotgun with an 18.5" barrel, I think it would be silly to try to turn it into something it's not. Like put a super full choke on it and hunt turkeys with it.

But at the distances normally encountered for HD or SD are you really trying to tighten up the pattern? And except for some kind of dispersion choke, at HD/SD distances would any kind of choke make more than a 1/4" difference in the pattern anyway?

I guess you could use it for partridge, quail or rabbits, but then you wouldn't need a choke I don't think.

Dispersion or breach was the the only thing I could think of for chokes.
