Who has a Model 57?

What do you feed it in the way of factory ammo?

Anybody hunt with theirs?

How do you like it? (dumb question)

Got pics?

I have one.

Easiest ammo to come by around here are Winchester Silvertips, so that's what I carry most of the time.

I had the M57 modified by a good 'smith...replaced the stock 6" tube with a magnaported 4", had the gun round-butted and fitted with a Hogue hardwood grip, action tuned and hammer bobbed. It's a pretty serious toting iron, my idea of the ultimate combat revolver. .41 Magnum is a very eclectic and efficient caliber. It hits harder than .357 Magnum, recoils less and shoots flatter than .44 Magnum...what's not to like?

I have a S&W 57, 6" , factory nickel, with Skeeter Skelton's Deeson Bear Hug grips, made for my hand. I'm a big .41 Mag. fan, and use it in combo with my Marlin 1894S, .41 Mag. I bought the S&W in 1982.

I've used the revolver to kill a 400 pound Black bear, with one shot. He was in a tree, perhaps 20 yards up. At that time, I was using the Rem. factory 210 JHP cartridge. Because of the angle, the bullet hit his heart, clipped a lung and clipped the spine. I did not recover the bullet. I now use Joe Penny 220 gr hard cast and Beartooth Bullets 265 gr. hard cast gas check bullets.

When I'm out in the mountains, and especially in elk/deer camp, I wear it. I live in Black bear country and Mountain lion country.

I've killed one medium sized Mule deer with the Marlin .41 Mag., standing broadside at 90/95 yards. Went down like a ton of brick.

The .41 Mag. is a fine cartridge, in my opinion, and I wouldn't be without mine.

Had a really nice 8 5/8" blued 57.

Sold it. Shouldn't have.

Wish I had it back. Fed it reloads, 210 grain Noslers, H110 powder seems like 20 grains but I don't have my log book near.
Killed a couple of feral hogs with it, took it deer hunting but wasn't able to get one.

Yep, a 6" blued version. Before I started reloading I was shooting Georgia Arms ammo. I noticed that ProLoad also does a .41 magnum load, but I've never tried it.

I've never been hunting before. If I did, I would go out with one of my .41 mags.

Do I like it? Take a look at my sig. :D It's one of my favorites.

I have one, a blued six inch model. I've used it mainly for pin shooting and knocking down steel plates. I may hunt deer with it this fall. It is my favorite .41 Magnum.

I own several S&W .41 Magnums...

M-57 nickel with a four inch barrel (customized by Ron Powers)
M-57 blued with a four inch barrel (stock)
M-58 nickel with a four inch barrel (customized by Ron Powers)
M-657 with a three inch barrel (customized by Ron Powers)
M-657 with a six inch barrel (stock)

Carried them for years and load them with either...
Winchester 175-grain Silvertips (1250 fps)
Federal 210-grain Hi-Shok (1300 fps)

The Federal load is deadly accurate in all of my revolvers, especially at extended ranges.

Recently read about Elmer Keith's favorite .41 Magnum load which was comprised of a 220-grain Keith wadcutter over 22 grains of something...Blue Dot I think. I'll look for my notes and get back to you on this one. He said it was the most accurate and powerful load he had tried out of many different loadings.

As for the two stock revolvers, they won't be for long. ;)

I have a new 4" blue Model 57 that I inherited from my Dad that's still NIB and the cylinder hasn't been turned on it yet. I don't own any rounds for it, since I have several Model 29s which I do reload for and shoot extensively.

I will join the cult.

Finalized a deal for a mint, possibly unfired 6 inch Model 57.
It came from an estate. The wood presentation case is in great shape, except the lining is crumbling, as I've seen a lot of them do. Gun and case were stored separately. Papers and tools are unscathed and in new cond. (Oh goody, another little screwstick).

It is ser# range S319xxx.

What d'ya think? '67 or '68?

It might be 30 days before I see it in person. The wait is gonna be tough.

Thanks for the input guys, I think it will be a great addition to my stable of N frames! :)

I use the 41 Magnum for my Cowboy shooting; a pair of Ruger Bisleys with Marlin's 1894 CCL in 41 Magnum for the rifle. Used my S&W mountain gun as backup last fall for elk, but didn't get a shot. Have a few other Model 57's for fun, and a couple of Redhawks too. Great cartridge that fits in perfectly between the 357 and the 45 Colt and can be loaded to just the right amount of power for most anything you want to do with a centerfire revolver.

Have a whole gaggle of .41s!:p

P.S. Below is 3" M657; was mislabelled.

I have a M58. Darn, one digit off! Mine has been tuned and made DA only with a spurless hammer. A lot of power for a relatively compact package. It's my carry gun in the great outdoors when I don't know how legs trouble will have.

Anthony- I passed on a nickeled M58 about 20 years ago and have been kicking myself hard ever since.

Like some of the other's, I had a blue 4" S&W model 57;
and being young and crazy, I traded it for a used 4" S&W
nickeled model 29. Shouldn't have-

I have a Model 57-1, 4" barrel. I've only managed to put 3 rounds thru it since I acquired it back in January.

I'll post a pic later (I'm at work now). The bluing is in good shape with some minimal holster wear. I need to get a nice set of grips - it wears Pacs now. The previous owner was to deliver the factory grips along with speed-loaders to the shop where I bought it (they had the gun on consignment) but you know how that goes..

Although I have yet to put it thru a good range session, I do like this gun. Great DA trigger pull, fantastic SA trigger pull, & I just like the look of a 4" N frame!
