I just walked in the door at work after picking up my newest friend. it is a S&W .357 Combat Magnum, mod 66 (no dash) Sn4k563xx with a 4inch barrel and target type grips. It is sitting in a dark blue two piece box. On the lid says Smith & Wesson A Bangor Punta Company.

When was it produced and about how many were made of this type.

It has a butchered night sight installation on the front sight and some holster wear but has a nice lock up.

What are the differences between the target grips, trigger, hammer and the others???? or non target?

paid $299
25 shipping and 23 nic

Target trigger n hammer are both a bit wider than the standard. Target grips are usually larger and fuller at the bottom. Horrible for small handed like me.

Bangor Punta was the owner prior to Lear Siegler.

Oh, by the way, you didn't get a .357 Combat Magnum, you got a .357 Combat Magnum Stainless.

Big difference. :)

Wow. I sober up quickly... mainly because I wasn't drinking.

what is Tamara refering to P&R

The story from the Gent I bought it from was some FBI guy owned it while he lived in the NE somewhere, he retired and moved to Louisiana and has since died and his wife or estate is sellin off the guns. typical gun store Sea story

pinned and recessed. There is a pin that holds the barrel in place. Recessed is the slight counter sink on the cylinder. These are both desirable features that were dropped to cut production costs.

In response to your inquiry on Target this or that...

Target trigger - wider trigger spur that can excede the width of the trigger guard. This makes the gun unsuitable for police use as the trigger can get snagged on the holster (negligent discharge).

Target hammer - wider hammer spur for ease of SA cocking. The normal hammer is only slightly wider that the operating surface of the hammer.

Target Stock - bigger, hand filling stocks. The original S&W had small grips that followed the outline of the grip frame. Target Stocks often go below the frame and in front of the grip strap of the frame. It's much better for bigger hand folks.

IIRC, the 66 (no dash) has a stainless ramp front sight that's kinda hard for me to pick up, if it doesn't have a red or orange thingie insert. Still kinda neat...

I got back from the range a little while ago and the frist time I fired the gun it was extra hard with a nasty kick, which I put to it not being ported like my Taurus. I fired off the next 2 and it felt like a 30-06 going off in my hand. I tried to shoot the next and the DA pull was really hard. I finished off the full cylinder load. I wondered what happened these loads are really pussy cat loads.
I looked into the cylinder and found a nasty ring of crud in each chamber, not a lot but somebody had fired a bunch of 38 spec in it before I got it. I took some hoppes cleaner and a patch and smeared a bunch in each chamber. I shot a NEF handirifle in 243f for a while to get it sighted in. I then went to my new pistol and scrubbed the chambers with a wire brush. WOW what a difference I loaded the gun up and shot a nice group at 50 feet.

Hutch the front sight is stainless but you might be able to see in one of the photos attached. Whoever had it before me has butchered a night sight into the front sight. Any body got an extra front sight, blued and serrated.

Sounds like there was enough crud from the .38s in the cylinders to inhibit the bullet release from the longer magnum loads. Thus raising pressures and giving you the rather stout recoil and noise.

In the future, to prevent another such occurance, simply shove EMPTY/FIRED magnum cases into the cylinder. The straight mouth edges will cut the excess crud out in one shot and then render it safe to shoot with magnums.

When a magnum gun has been used with special loads, even tho the loaded magnum rounds may chamber easily, that doesn't mean there is enough room left for the case mouth to uncrimp and release the bullet. But if an empty mag case will go in, you are safe.
