Who uses red dots on their hunting handguns?

I recently purchased a Smith & Wesson 22A and promptly installed a Tasco red dot 50mm and it has been a great asset. Shooting this .22 caliber handgun with a red dot has greatly improved grouping accuracy, as well as hunting kills.

Just before purchasing the 22A, I purchased a Ruger Super Redhawk .44 Mag. that's producing 2" groups at 40 yards with open sights. However, that grouping size jumps to 5 3/4" at 60 yards. I would like to maintain the 2" to 3" group size at 60 yards with the use of a red dot. I have ordered a Sightmark Ultra Shot, that should be here by the end of the upcoming week.

Who uses a red dot sight on their hunting handgun(s)?

Thank you, Bowhunter57

I use a red dot on all my hand guns. With my old eyes if I can see the target then I cannot see the sights and vise-versa. Red dots eliminate that. I take off the rear sight and mount the red dot in its place.

I use a sightmark red dot on my ruger 22/45 to squirrel hunt and it has really improved my shooting. Helps alot with my groups at the range to.:)

Millet Red Dot

I have a Millet Red Dot 1X on a Smith 629 classic with 6 1/2 inch barrel. Makes a huge difference in groups. I ain't no sharp shooter but I can drill out the bullseyes at 25 yards with a rest, and make 3 inch groups off hand. Hope to use it on white tail next fall, if my confidence is good. I agree with igousigloo---seeing the front sight and the target with bifocals just doesn't happen for me. The red dot makes it all work good. So far the Millet has held up to the recoil. I don't shoot much full house ammo, and that likely helps extend the using life.

A red dot is essential on my Mark 1 .22 for shooting armadillos at night. The first shot never misses but follow-ups always miss because the darn critters are moving about 100 miles an hour after eating the "hot lead"!! :D

...but they don't go far...

It sounds like Redneck and myself have similar setups. The red dot sight has rejuvenated my shooting. Old eyes just don't work too well with irons anymore.

Good shootin there black mamba! Makes a guy feel good to shoot like that, especially after squinting down range and, for me anyway, spraying shots all over the target time after time. That red dot made this fun again. Does anyone know if there is a low profile open style red dot that would mount on a Ruger SP101?

My Contender 44 mag keeps breaking them, (adco, bushnell.) Made a huge difference for me having the red dot on there. Between open sights, EER scope or red dot the red dot wins every time. Quick and easy to shoot.

My eyes are at that stage too, but I plod along. Handgun range is now about bow range, 25yds and hopefully closer. My 50yds groups are pitiful.

Lately the idea of a small dot on a sport/field handgun is interesting. The Leupold Deltpoint and the Burris Fastfire are candidates.

Have a red dot on my S&W 22A's 5 inch barrel that works pretty well on squirrel but I prefer the 2-6X on it's 7 inch barrel. Have a red dot on my 30-20 Contender for rabbits and the like and then another on my 10" 357mag for hogs in the woods.

I have used a J-Point reflex with 4mil red dot on my S&W 500 for the past seven years. Over 1500 rounds through it and all in the 1400 t0 1500 fps range. After 4 years it appeared that something had come loose so sent it back and repaired. The folks at J P told me glue holding lens had come loose. It has worked well since. I really like the small size and accuracy of this sight. If I were to replace would probably go to Leupold Delta sight, about same size and type.

OkieCruffler,
The 50mm Tasco red dot has greatly improved groups at the range (inside a dime at 20 yards) and made it easier for good kill shots on squirrels. I've been using Remington Subsonics. :)

The scope on the 7" barrel allows me to reach out to 50yrds which is about as far as I care to hunt squirrel with a normal 22 handgun. I have a 6-24X on my 14" contender barrel and I can reach out and hit a squirrel with it farther than the 22 is effective but that's a whole different critter.
