Who Said That?

Who coined the phrase “Sport Utility Rifle”? I really want to thank you once more.
Told my wife about it she cracked up.

First time I heard that phase was in a local gun shop... the discussion was weather to use that phase instead of "weapon".... This was supposed to make the "evil black rifle" more benign to the common folk (Re: anti's).... this was about 1975-76...

The person using and advocating that term was the shop owner and really belived that this sort of thing would stop the anti trend.
He was the local NRA rep, so the term MAY have or may NOT have started with the NRA politicos themselves....

He died about 2-3 years ago and his son says that he recanted in his retirement years believing that he really really misjudged the anti's...

No S***....

First person that I remember hearing it from was on this board, Oleg Volk. I thought it was pretty funny then. You would have to ask him where he got it from.

Probably some marketer employed by Colt back when the assault rifle debate first came to the fore front of politics.
