Who loves their Makarov & why?

I went shooting yesterday with one of the guys on my squad. He's 10 years younger than me. I solely shot my Makarov. He shot our duty Glock 23. We try to get atleast an hour or two a week on our pistols, shotgun, and AR-15 on our Dept. range, live fire exercises, mostly steel pepper poppers.

My partner is looking for an off duty piece. Well after previously caking me about the Makarov, I let him shoot about 250 rounds out of it. Well, it started with a couple mags full and then to 250 rounds. He offered me two and one half times what I paid for it on the spot. I said, No Way!

I then showed him where he could buy his own at a reasonable price. He was kicking some serious butt shooting my little East German Jewel. I'm gonna hook him up with pierce grips and a 21 lbs. Wolfe recoil spring for Xmas. (Hey, he may save my a** with his Mak one day, right?)

Anyway I love my Makarov and it ain't for sale at any price!

Age and Treachery usually beats out Youth and Fitness any day!

I do.

It's a piece of history. Mine's a 1961 East German.
It's very accurate.
It's well designed and made. Very simple takedown.
It's very reliable. I have purposefully not cleaned it for several range sessions to try and get it to choke.
It's very comfortable to carry.

Hoppy

It's hard to beat a gun that goes bang every time. Say what you want abou the caliber, reliability is high on my "must have" list.

Just got my first Mak yesterday - an unfired Bulgarian.

Haven't gotten to clean it up and shoot it yet (can't wait!), but I love the size, and the feel of cold hard steel. This thing shouldn't ever break! I like the idea that I didn't pay much for a well-built tool that I can take out and shoot the hell out of. Also can take it camping, fishing, hiking, etc. w/o having to worry about a ding or two.

I also have a CZ75B mil. Seems all the Eastern Euro guns are very high quality and great value.

Dragon Dog, That's exactly why I bought mine. How can I lose ? is what I thought, when I bought it. If it was a junker, only moderate pain would have been endured. Mine turned out to be a porche. And if It were to get dinged, big deal. Cold blue the ding and keep shooting. Cz-83 in 9X18 may be next on a long list.

Quality and Reliability exceed those of many guns costing 5-10X as much.

The Colt Gold Cup I own reinforce this belief on both counts.

My Glock and Beretta seem a like little less effort went into fitting them,
though reliability is excellent for both.

Why do I love my Makarovs? Over sixteen-thousand rounds fired and only three failures (all were FTEs with one aftermarket hi-cap mag).

Pull the trigger. Pistol goes bang. Round hits where you aim. Pretty hard to argue with that.

Take care. Marko

Butch, could it be that....you're...my....BROTHER!!?

I was thinking the exact same thing - a CZ83 in 9x18 would REALLY be nice!! Let me know if you hear of a second one somewhere (assume you'll be getting the first).

Take it easy.

Now if it only had decent sights!

You mean like this? :D

Take care. Marko

Well, Marko and the others have it right. Reliability, history, accuracy, ease of carry and its built like a tank. If its good enough as the standard Russian military sidearm, its good enough for me.

It is a great little gun.

The most accurate gun of its size I have ever shot.
Decent trigger for a DA.
Slide mounted safety that works in the right direction. ;)
Cheap Russian Ammo.
Super reliable.
Easy to strip.
All that for under $200.

My only complaints are the tiny front sight, but once you get used to it, it isn't so bad, and the heel clip mag release. But once again, once you get used to it, it isn't so bad.
