US Bill Poisons Ties: Beijing

By Associated Press

Beijing has urged Washington to strike out parts of a defence bill it says will damage improving ties.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said members of Congress had laced the defence bill with "many anti-China clauses" that sought
to "interfere in China's internal affairs and disrupt US-China relations".

Beijing "expresses strong indignation and firm opposition" to the clauses in the Defence Authorisation Act passed by Congress for the coming
financial year.

Ms Zhang did not specify which clauses she was referring to. A "small number" of members of Congress who proposed these clauses had
focused on sensitive issues such as Taiwan, weapons proliferation and allegations of Chinese espionage, she said.

If enacted, these parts of the US defence bill "can only do serious damage to the exchanges and co-operation between China and the United in
various fields and poison bilateral relations".

She urged the US Government to take immediate steps to delete the clauses.

"The Chinese side asks the US administration to fully realise the serious harm and bad effects that those anti-China clauses would do to
China-US relations," she said.
