I know the american walthers are being sold or imported by S&W but are they making the new guns? Anyone seen any of the new models out and how's the quality hopfully better than the old ranger company models.

I am not positive, but I have been told that the American Walther PPK and PPK/S are still being made in the same plant Interarms set up in Arkansas.

I've been going shooting w/ a guy that purchased a new .380 ppk/s around Christmas. I haven't been impressed. The 4 or 5 times he has had it w/ him, it has had multiple jams all but one time. He has thoroughly cleaned it thinking that was the problem, but it hasn't helped.

S&W is now making the PPK/S in Maine. I saw one today and it was laser engraved not roll marked like the Interams were. O the right side of slide it has Walther-Smith and Wesson Houton, Maine. Anyones guess if quality will be better.

Are they making, or will they make a run of standard PPKs? I've long wanted one but felt the Interarms version had too spotty of a reputation to risk $450 or so bucks. Not interested in the PPK/S.

What Ironcross said.

A S&W rep. told me the ppk will be out in about 6 months, they are also rumored to be offered with a alloy/ti* frame.

Now big surprise about reliability with the new walthers. I have an Interarms Walther that jams all the time. I considered having it sent off for a reliablity package, but this thing cost me $400 to begin with and I'm not all that happy with it. I've handled snakes that were less prone to biting.

I own a ppk in 32 auto american and this gun never jams and shoots extremely accurate. I also had a 380 ppk and this gun was a dog. Walther bought the gun back full price. I would like to see a reliable 380 in ppk. I do believe that S&W would build a better quality pistol than the old american ranger company. I may buy a blue ppk next time, if these new walthers get good reviews.

For the people complaining about .380 PPK reliability...is that the general experience with regular copper jacketed "round nose" bullets?

My reason for asking is I've tried a PPK on a range using hollow point reloads from a reliable company (NEVER had a misfire with reloads from the same company for 3 other guns in two different calibers)...seemed to ALWAYS jam on the first round of a fully loaded mag, and occasionally on the rest of the mag.

When I tried "regular" bullets (still reloads from the same company) the jamming stopped. Seemed that the leading lip of hollowpoint bullets hung up when feeding.

Pocketman - I appreciate that heads-up about the PPK. I think I'm gonna have to put that item in the budget and tell my dealer to keep an eye out for when they are available. I saw a NIB Interarms PPK at the last gun show I attended for (I think) $419 but I decided to pass given the defunct status of Interarms and the spotty reports I have long read here and elsewhere. I think I'll take a flyer on one of the new ones though. Thanks.

Laz, I recently picked up a nib interarms ppk/s I did so after I checked with S&W/Walther usa and was told they are doing the warrenty work on these guns.

The new walther usa ppk/s have had some slight refinments done internally to improve function/reliability.

I am also waiting to see the smaller ppk when it comes, I like the thought of an alloy frame also.

Pocketman - I appreciate that info. I kinda suspected that Walther would honor warranty work on it but never got that far and did not really discuss purchase with the dealer. Actually, I bought a Vaquero 4 5/8 stainless .357 at that show. Still want a PPK though. That usually means one ending up in my inventory sooner or later <g>. Thanks.

Sorry about the bum info on the PPK factory. I am glad they are not using that plant, but that is what I had been told.

As to the PPK/S, I have one that gave me all sorts of problems. I rolled the recoil spring on a belt sander until I thought it looked right and have fired over 500 rounds since with not a bobble.
