I knew I was in the right place with all the Ayn Rand quotes I've been seeing here! The Firing Line is the most interesting and helpful site I've come across on the net. Keep up the good work. I'm a newbe here-whats a FUD anyway :).

34 posts, and you're a 'newbie'? Nah ... you're a vet. A young vet. ;)

A FUD is a very friendly cyber companion, but don't stand too close to him ... it has been rumored to be dangerous. ;)

Glad these guys can help, probably not me as I usually just make smart ass remarks :D

The beauty of the second Amendment is that it is not needed until they try to take it. T JEFFERSON

Do you really think that we want those laws to be observed? We want them broken. We're after power and we mean it. There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breakings laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted-and you create a nation of law breakers--and then you cash in on guilt.

What's a FUD? A complete answer would use up way too much bandwidth!

1. One of our posters, a rather nice guy, who apparently had a very sheltered upbringing. He seems almost to have been deliberately kept in ignorance of many things a lot of us take for granted.

2. He's trying hard to learn.

3. He's accident prone, and has a little black cloud following him around. Sorta like Joe Btzyflk in Al Capp's "Lil Abner".

4. The cyber-name comes from "Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt", IIRC. I'm doubtful about the fear, actually, but there is obvious uncertainty.

5. Don't stand next to him.

So that's what it stands for. I thought for sure, given all of his thought provoking questions, that it stood for "food", just spelled funny. As in "food for thought", or "FUD for thought".

In the 18th century the renown inventor, B. Franklin, deigned to devise a devious device designed to attract evil and dangerous forces to itself, thussly diverting dangerous debilitating disasters from mankind. He called it a FUD. Alas, the market ignored him and it didn't sell. He changed the name to "Lightning Rod" and the rest is history.

We prefer FUD

brianidaho,

It is a pleasure to find fellow readers of massive novels! I'm searching through Rand's books to find the perfect signature line.

Glad to have you amongst us!
