Who custom builds AK's?

If I were to buy an AK receiver, US parts, and a parts set, who can expertly put it together for me, and how much would it cost?

you realize an ape could put a ak together. personally the beauty of an ak is the design but if you wanted to go nuts with one i would start with a saiga izhmash arsenal ak and mod from there.

*whew* I was worried the first post would be Red Jacket. I would've cried. :o

If you're going to look for a well-made AK, I would definitely check out Arsenal. From there, you can do just about anything you would like to it.

No. The AK may be simple in operation and maintenance, but actually making one is a more complex and involved process than an AR in my opinion. You can manufacture practically all the parts of an AR with just a mill and lathe, and assemble them with a set of pin punches.

AKs need stamping machines, mills, lathes, riveters. Alot of things that you won't find in your typical garage workshop.

I had a line on a minty galil parts kit a while back, so I bounced Kenny (Wildalaska @ Wild West Guns) an e-mail. He said his gunmonkeys wouldn't know what to do with it, so not every ape is suitable for the job. :D

I'll follow this thread with interest; if you find somebody good and are happy with the results, I may pull my own project out of limbo.

If you want quality go with KREBs or if you have stock Arsenal send it to one source tactical for their upgrade package.

I would ask the folks at Atlantic firearms. They always have some nice builds for sale and could point you to a good outfit. I am always intrigued by their selection of AK's.

FWIW I don't think you can beat the craftsmanship of the eastern european countries when it comes to complete AK rifles. I am talking about Russian rifles, Yugos (zastava), and Bulgarian mainly.

Having built a little over a dozen (14) AKs in the past I can say that no ape is going to be able to build one.

Its already been said and I'll say it again - building an AK from a flat receiver is not easy. You'd have an easier time building an AR from a stripped lower and stripped upper than an AK from a flat receiver and parts kit.

You need a press to bend the receiver into shape (and you need to be precise - if you're off by a little bit the gun won't function reliably). You then need to weld the receiver together. After that you're ready to begin assembly. Of course an AK is riveted together and not put together using pins/detents etc. So now you need a riveter. If you mess up you'll need to drill out the rivet(s) and redo it. Then the trunion and barrel are usually twisted and pinned into place. Now you'll need machinery to do that. All in all its not an easy process.

If you want a custom AK you're better off buying a Saiga and customizing it yourself OR buy an Arsenal AK. You could also contact Krebs Custom for a custom build or better yet check out this:

Agree with Hansam.

But if you do want to build ( assemble ) then AK builder.com is the place to go. Customer service is great. Prices decent

Geez, if you can't build an AK from parts, there's really no reason to own one...
Kind of like an AR15...any idiot can put one together...
Its not hard, but you do have to be a little OCD so you do it right ;)

What I'm actually looking for is someone who can assemble a chinese parts set on a 1.6mm receiver with the proper rivets etc. I like the robustness of the 1.6mm guns and the chinese parts, but I understand they may be a little different to assemble. I checked out Rifle Dynamics - $400 is their base price for assembly - that seems steep, if I'm supplying the receiver and parts. I was hoping to be able to build one cheaper than simply buying one. Plus, I can chose how I want to finish the receiver - blued would be my preference.
