I have a Marlin model 336 in .35 REM,and I have a Remington 700 classic 7mm-08

You guys know this stuff alot better than me so which is better for Michigan white tail?

Someone ought to move this over to the hunt. Anyway, either will take a whitetail here in PA, so I don't see why it wouldn't in MI. I would take the '08, but I like that cartridge. I would suggest that you take which ever you shoot better. That is more important than caliber, if they are adequite.

It has been many years since I took a deer in Michigan, so take this with a grain of salt.

I would go with the 7-08 and a 139 grn softpoint. Here in Texas I have taken several whitetails with this load out of my 700BDL and it always anchored them quickly if I did my part.

My michigan deer are only 2. One with my 357 python at a some total of about 15 feet (Opening day, he hopped out onto a logging road south of T.C. and he froze. I aimed one shot and hunting season was over for me) and the other was with a 308 over a hay field near Clare.

I think the 35 may be more gun then you need unless you are going to "swamp it" and then it becomes a better brush choice.

PS: the deer in Michigan taste better then Texas, but the Racks down here beat Michigan by a long shot. Also, you ought to see what these guys shoot in south Texas in the sendero's. I commonly work down there in the oil business and I find these massive cartraiges all the time. 338 win mags, 340 Weatherby's, I have even found some 30x375 Weatherby's (or was it 30x338????) etc. Huge things for these little deer with big horns.

i'm going to say the 35 remington. I live in st clair county, shotgun zone but when i venture up for rifle hunting i'm going to take my marlin 336 with me. the 7mm-08 is a great round but the 35 is just as good a stopper, kicks less, comes in a more compact package and if your choosing a lever gun, it'll shoot faster. i'm a big beleiver in large softpoint tips for game, having mostly taken them with a 12 ga i know what big slow blunt noses will do and it never fails to impress me.

Is your hunting going to be under 150 yards? If so, then by all meens go with the 35 Rem. Though I do not hunt with one, I have/do hunt with a few fellas that use/d the 35. Together they must have well over 150 years of hunting with the 35. Never a complaint, and every deer I saw taken with the 35 did not travel far, granted everyone I hunt with is responsable enough to wait for good, clean shots. Matter of fact, one fella, who has since passed, hunted with the 35 for 60+ years, Remington Model 8 or 11. He said that he never had to shoot a deer twice, and never had to track a deer very far. The Marlin is also a all around sweet gun. By far a nicer gun the the Win94, which is a OK gun in its own right.

When ranges get longer, the 708 is a awesome cartridge. Can't go wrong with any cartridge based on the 308 case. Someday I hope to have a 243, 260, 708, 308, 33-08, and a 358 just for kicks.:)
