Which Walther next?

Ok, Walther owners, collectors and shooters, here's the deal. There are just too many fine choices and I have no winning lottery tickets. I can only get one more Walther(now).

Which would YOU choose in .380? A PPK, or a PP? The pistol will be for maybe for an occassional CCW, but mostly just shooting, admiring and adding to my others. Both are admittedly fine weapons, both will be getting more difficult to find, and both fit my hand nicely. I'm leaning a bit toward the PP, but not by enough to push me. Opinions please?

Also, why does the P5 compact command a higher price when the P5 full size would appear to be the prefered pistol?

Please, help end my torment!

I would go for the German PPK. They are getting harder to find as they cannot be imported. The PP's are still a dime a dozen in terms of availability.

Production was not as great for the P5C as the full-size. The P5 had about a decade's head start on it.

Personally, I'd also go for an P1A1. More bucks, but rarer still.

PPK. I think it's a great sized gun, especially for ankle carry. The PP is just bigger, and doesn't give you much more than a little extra barrel length. Also, and less importantly, I love the way the PPK looks and it does have that Bond thing going for it.

Mine is an American stainless PPK, and I love it. It's one of my favorite carry guns. Shoots real nice, and I find it more accurate than my J-frames.

I think the P-5 compact is more than the P-5 just because it's rarer. But if you want a new Walther, you should check out the P99. What a sweet gun.

BI, here is a deal I found on GunsAmerica:

1968 PPK Blue .380 99% German
GA# 976128637 $650.00

1968 German Walther ppk 380 blue high polish finish in 99% cond with the original brown plastic grips with eagle on right side. No handling marks of any kind and the grips are in excellent cond with no cracks or shrinkage. Gun has probably been fired but looks unfired. Comes with one mag with brown finger ext. no box or papers. Buyer pays shipping to FFL. No trades needed. US postal money order only.

Seller: JOSEPH D FEMOYER
Area Code: 631 FFL Dealer: No

BI, this sounds like is has the reproduction Party Leader grips on it. This is not a bad thing as Earl charges $100 a set for these.

I corrected the spelling and punctuation so it was readable.

why not

a PPK/S?

I have kinda bigger hands, and the PPK was a little small. The longer grip of the PPK/S, and the one extra round, was quite nice. I traded my PPK/S about a year ago, and hope to get another one someday, mostly for CC. Great gun, I'd carry in condition 2 anyday.

BTW, it's 9mm KURZ, there is no T in it.

Herr Walther,

I did see that one on GA, but it was already sold pending funds. I get the PPK and the PPK/S confused. The PPK/S fits my hand perfect, and the PP has the same grip. I'm concerned that the PPK might be a bit short. Which was one reason I was leaning more towards the PP. What's been your experience with the German PPK/S? I know you prefer PPK over the PPK/S and the German to the American made. I've heard several disgruntled owner of the American PPK/S, mainly in stainless, but not a lot about the German version. I apologize if it's a repeat question, but the PP series is hard series to keep straight for the beginner.

Also, I have seen pictures of the P1, but what is the P1A1? Are you trying to give me information overload so you can see my head spin off into space? Can't wait till I get started on the P38 and variations. That's after I sell the house to get more cash. Still got a P5 to get too! Hoi Vei!

NOTE TO SELF: Keep Walthers unloaded, and ammo hidden in case wife finds them.

Branrot,

I did check out the P99.................bought one in 9mm and one in .40. I always wanted twins.

Banrot,

Yeah, the first Walther I bought was the P99 in .40. Liked the feel, loved it after I shot it. Then went and got one in 9mm plus a hi-cap. Then got interested in Walthers in general. Sooooo, I went and got P88c. Nothing like having a line of pistols that nearly all fit you, all quality weapons and all are just plain fun and interesting to own. Can't see a reason to buy anything else. Too bad their 5 shot .357 mag pistol is so expensive. But then, there's always the lottery!

Think of it this way.

PP large Introduced First in '29
PPK small Introduced Second in '31
PPK/S hybrid Introduced Third in '68

I have no experience with the German PPK/S. As you said I'm not really crazy about it. I like the two originals best. The stainless American PPK/S I had, I sold many moons ago for some other Walther.

Hey, I don't want to see any spinning heads! The P1A1 is a modified
P5 for the Armed Forces. It has a positive safety built into the slide. It was a military requirement for acceptance and is use with the British Special Forces. Probably a few other elite agencies as well, but the British are the only ones I know of for sure.

The safety is not really needed, but it is a unique, low production model and worthy of any Walther collection. One of these days...

You better have a stiff drink before you dive in to the P.38 pool. That's a whole 'nother world.

Big Iron,
The more I think about this, the more I like the idea of the new P-22!!! I think I will have to aquire one of those myself!!!:D

Herr Walther,
The "s" in PPK/S stands for stupid. As in stupid GCA 68!!!:barf:

Now that I've figured out how to circumvent my host's firewall, I'll probably go image crazy!

Can anyone else see these images??? They looked fine on the computer at work. Now that I'm on my home system they've disappeared.

i miss my ppk/s american made one. .32 cal .when i first got it it would jam om hp but after 500 or so rounds it would digest any ammo.the only thing i dont like about it was the safty had to be thrown up to fire.as oposed to flicking it down on the makarov.down swipe with the thumb is more natural to me.
i will get another ppk or ppk/s but this on may be in .380 .not sure the .32 was sweet and o so acurate.

scoops don't buy the 380 unless it's german. Get the 32 in the PPK much better function and reliablity. I have a friend who works for S&W Walther Repair) he stated that very few American 32's come back for repair but the 380's are junk. If you want a 380 buy a german one or just buy a Makarov. I have a 32 American PPK and had a 380 PPK, the 380 went back to Walther for a full refund I bought a Makarov instead. Now I own three Makarov's watch out their like rabbit's they multiply rather quickly.
As for the 32 American it's my backup gun and 2,000 rounds thought it without one failure of any kind with mixed ammo.;)
