i'm looking at a weatherby vanguard from a local gun shop in very excellent condition. what i need to know is whether or not its one of those new walmart remakes or the original ones that were discontinued. is there any way to tell the difference.

the one i'm looking at is made from japan... hope that helps.

thanks,

nevermind

i found out from the weatherby website

the originals were manufactured in japan while the new walmart vanguards are made here in the usa

Take a look in Walmart and you will see that the new ones are made in Japan as well. I think the info in the FAQ's on the weatherby site is misleading. The important thing is that htese rifles are very well made. They come with the weatherby gaurrantee that they will shoot any premium factory ammo into a group of 1.5 inches at 100 yards.
The one I looked at in Wally world was $386 and the test target had a 3 shot 5/8" 100 yard group with winchester partition ex.
(.270 winchester). The accuracy and quality guarrantee is the same for this rifle as for any other weatherby.

Do winchester (mod 70) or Remmington (700 adl) come with such an accuracy guarantee or a test target??????

These guns seem like a tremendous value to me

i got permission to look at the owner's manual and it seems that it was printed up in 1989. does that make it an original? Or is it STILL a walmart redo?

The interesting thing I think is the accuracy guarantee which is the same as for the $1500 guns they make. I looked a a new one in walmart and the manual was dated and said revised in 1997. They are still made in Japan by Howa for weatherby to their specifications. I bought one after handling its $1500 bretheren in a gun store. the stock is not as good, the action is a bit smoother on the expensive weatherby and has 9 very small locking lugs instead of 2 very large lugs. The test target for the $1500 stainless model was about 1/2" with the same bullet (partition ex). The wally world model I bought did a 5/8" group. The trigger on the Walmart model was almost as nice as on the real weatherby, and I can adjust it down to 3 pounds!!!

The leupold mounts are the same for the remmington 700 as for the Vangaurd and the Mark V. Does remmington have their receivers made by Howa???

Ithought it was interesting the the dimensions were similare enough that leupold recommended the same sight base for both guns. Funny coincidence, well must be that weatherby is copying the Remmington 700 receiver.
