Which used 9mm

I would like to start by thanking everyone in advance for your help and advice. I’m in the market for a 9mm. A shop I frequent has three used pistols that have caught my eye: S&W 3906 $350, S&W 6906 $429, and a HK USP Compact, $529.( I hope the model numbers are correct.) All are in great conduction, especially the HK (looks NIB). I’m not much of a pistol man, so I need some advice. Are any of these a good deal? By the way, it would used for a range gun and maybe some CCW and IDPA.

And let me confuse you further. You can get a new FEG PJK 9HP, clone of the much-loved Browning Hi-Power, for somewhere around $199-$250

I got mine in December and love it dearly. Great Hi-Power feel, accuracy, reliability, etc. Now that mine's broken in, the trigger pull (with a good magazine) is delightful. No 'smithing required.

17rd magazines (and traditional 13 rounders) are readily available and relatively inexpensive.

Accessories and upgrade parts are also plentiful.

What's not to love?

If the three pistols you mentioned are the only ones you have to choose from then I would go with the HK compact. HK's are pretty good pistols. The HK mark 23 was chosen as the offensive pistol of the US Special Forces. It went through some pretty scary torture tests. The CZ 75 mentioned is also a very nice pistol. I am not a fan of the Smith semi-auto's. I am not saying they are no good but I think they are some of the ugliest pistols I have ever seen.

Smith and Wesson doesn't build a semiauto pistol fit for duty. Get a Glock 17 or 19 or even a subcompact 26 but don't waste your time and money on a traitorous POS such as Smith $ Wesson sells. Boycott Smith $ Wesson...

Second 7th Fleet. There never was a decent S&W 9mm pistol made--I managed to complete a 22 yr LEO/firearms training career without having to deal with those things. I will be forever grateful. There was a reason there were 'guns of the week'--they could never get it right in the first place.

Either get a good revolver or a Glock and be done with it.

Out of those three, I'd recommend the HK...great pistols

But I'd also give a plug for my beloved sig 9mm's...The P226, P228, P229 are fantastic pistols accurate and wonderfully balanced. I also recommend the Glock 19 is also a fine firearm.

If you can, rent some of these guns that people have recommended and try them out, only sure fire way to know which you like the best.

JB,

First, welcome to TFL.

Sticking strictly to the three autoloaders mentioned in you initial post, the H&K is certainly the best bet. S&W's 9mm semiautomatics have questionable reputations (see foregoing posts), whereas H&K's reputation is outstanding. There are some other 9mm semiautomatics I'd evaluate as in the same class as the H&K USP -- Sigs and Glocks, for example -- but the S&Ws don't even come close to this category.

they are all good guns but i'd go with the HK if i had just those 3 to choose from. but if your willing to spend over $500 then you might as well get a glock. i'd recommend the G19 which sells usually for a little under $500 NIB. the G19 is smaller than the USP Compact and 6906 for CCW but holds more rounds then either of them.

Glock 19 - hi caps with 15-rounders

TargetMaster in PA, on the web sells factory rebuilt and/or used Glock 19s/23s with a pair of hi-caps for $399. Pay your FFL $20 and pay $15 for shipping and you've got the best pistosl to buy used.

Only 30-something parts and you can fix it yourself. Gunmisth not needed.
