Which Tommy? '28 or M1?

I have the opportunity to buy a select-fire Thompson, either a M1 in great shape or a 1928 in decent shape. I've shot both types, and like both, but can only afford one.

Advice?

I guess it really depends on how much you like the drum. As far as I know that is the one functional difference between the 1928 and the M1. With the drums being so expensive you may just want to go with the M1 as the stick magazines are still available at a decent price.

That is one of the hard parts...I already have a drum for my '27. I don't much like way the vertical foregrip handles, but I love the way it looks.

Sigh.

Most of the 1928s around are the military 1928A1, which is standard with the horizontal fore end. The guns can use either the horizontal grip or the vertical grip. I think I would go with the '28, since it is closer to the classic "Tommy" gun, has the Blish lock, and can take the drums. For shooting reliability and durability, the M1A1 probably is best as it has fewer parts.
