Which three handguns?

To consider yourself "universal" in your knowledge of handguns, which three do you feel you should be familiar with? Or another way of putting it, if you could choose three handguns to be proficient with, which three would they be? Why?

My three would be, in no particular order:

1. 1911 style handguns - they have been around for a long time and are popular around the globe.

2. Hi Powers and clones - the same reasons as above.

3. Colt Python - though any quality revolver would do. I believe people should be proficient with revolvers. It is both a historical and practical thing to me.

There were others which I'm sure will be listed by others. These are just mine.

Definitely the 1911 (in 45 ACP)...the easiest(for me)to shoot, easier to control than many would have you believe.

Any D/A revolver in a major caliber (357 to
45 Long Colt). Because you might not have access to an auto loader.

Any "single action" revolver...just because;
+ see above revolver answer.

But, I'll take the 1911 for PD any day over
ANY revolver.

What you mean there is something else other than the 1911 ?????
hehehe
1-1911
2-glock
3-then the SAA
is there anything else you need other than them????????????

I would say, to be universal, the three would be:
1) 1911- because they are so prolithic, and are everywhere.

2) DA/SA Auto-sto learn the nuances of the trigger switch,

3 DA Revolver- S&W or Colt, to learn good trigger control.

Just my $.02!

I also agree with OTISZ ... a 1911, a traditional DA/SA pistol, and a major caliber (.357 or higher) DA revolver

(if I could add a fourth, it would be a SAA in .45 colt)

Greetings To All, I guess my three picks
would be:

1) Smith & Wesson N-frame's,
ie; .357, .41, and .44 Mag's.

2) Any Sig auto-loader's

3) Ruger Super Blackhawk

You asked, "Why"? Because the Smith & Wesson
N-frame's are a breed apart; first introduced
in 1935, in the then brand new .357 Magnum.
Boy, good old Elmer Keith; what a man!!!!

Sig's because of their world-wide reputation
for: 1) Reliability, 2)Accuracy, 3)Quality
and 4)User Friendly.

The Ruger Super Blackhawk; design and engineering, and hell I may want to hunt
Griz one of these days. Always wanted
to act like Jeremiah Johnson!!!! :)

In all cases premising the highest-quality pieces, I would opt for:

1) 1911A1-type .45 ACP (probably a Wilson): The standard of comparison in single action semiautomatics and J. M. Browning's "foundation design".

2) Sig P-220/P-226: World-class single action/double action design in a more-modern semiautomatic. This is a close call over Glocks, H&Ks, etc., however, I believe the full-size Sig "P" series is -- overall -- the best of the lot.

3) "N" Frame S&W: A superior single action/double action revolver must also be included in this small -- three handguns only -- group. Here, too, there are many good alternatives including Ruger GP-100s, Smith 686s, and so forth. But the "N" frame series is rugged, reliable, dependable, highly accurate, and really provided the design basis for many other superb SA/DA revolvers.

Alot of you got it right.

1. 1911's and clones
2. S&W DA revolvers
3. glocks

they are the most common guns around and they each have a very different way of working so if you know them all then you can handle anything in between, basically? glocks might be the most common pistol in the US right now and the 1911 is either 1 above it or 1 below it. also basically all DA revolvers work the same and S&W's are the best. :-)

My 3 favorites are:
1) S&W 945 .45 ACP
2) SIG 239 9mm
3) Ruger 22/45 .22

1. Colt 1911
2. Glock 21 .45acp
3. Smith & Wesson Model 625 .45acp

Why bother learning the transistion on the double/single action semiauto, why in the heck would you want to handicap yourself with one of those pices of crap...7th

You just exposed your narrow-mindedness and lost a lot of credibility. Just thought you should know.

:(

My picks:

1) 1911 style
2) DA/SA
3) Striker-fired pistol (Glock, P99, Steyr, etc)
