Which target for open sight practice?

First I'll lay down some information, then ask the question.

I want to start shooting DCM matches soon. I am not that great with open sights at this time, but I'm sure this will improve with proper practice. I'm not sure if I could practice well at 200 yds right off the bat. I'm thinking I should start at 100 yds for a while. While my eyesight is close to 20/20, I have a hard time seeing orange colored targets while focusing on the front sight. I'm sure black would be better.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good target for me to start practicing with? Thanks.

Steve:

If we are talking about DCM and/or NRA High Power competitions, the correct target to practice with, at 100yds, would be the NRA SR-1 target which is a reduction of the standard 200yd high power target. This target has an aiming black, out to the 9 ring, of 6.35 inch diameter.

On the other hand, this target and the SR target aiming black will appear, at 100 or 200yds respectively, to be approximately 3/8 inch diameter.

You might try a small bore, slow fire rifle target which has a slightly larger aiming black, IIRC.

All of these, of course, are black on buff (or white) for good contrast.
