Which slug do you recommend?

I'm going to be shooting some 20 gauge slugs (2-3/4) out of my 1100, it's a smoothbore. This will be just a casual outing at the range for familiarity. I'm looking for the minimal amount of recoil felt at my shoulder possible. What are your recommendations or opinions for manufacturer and type?
 
Personally, I use the federal slugs or Winchester Super X. The "super X" are 1,600 FPS with a 3/4 ounce slug. They are a full load regular slug. Fine from my 18 inch mossberg barrel for 6 or so inches at 65 yards... offhand.
But more than 10:o I feel it. I do have limited strength in my left hand but that only affected me a bit.

I think I understand now. Are you saying that you shoot a 6" group at 65 yards, and more than 10 slugs and your shoulder gets sore?

Understand...I'm on my second cup now so I'm good.;) Sometimes the medium of printed words gets confusing when a lot of numbers fly around.

Problem is that it's a 20. There are low/light recoil slugs for 12 ga, but I've never seen any for 20 ga. :(

As far as kick, I've not observed much difference in brands out of my shotguns. Your 1100 should be about the best thing going for recoil reduction. Perhaps you could add a folded towel or a strap on recoil pad?

If you find someone with a single shot 2o, I suggest you fire the first 3 thru it... Then your gun will feel like a .22 with a soft butter recoil pad!:D My gun is a Mossberg 500 pump, Junior has an NEF and it is ABUSIVE BAD!:eek:

That's probably what I really need. The stock butt on my 1100 is hard as a rock. So I get more sore from that than I do my 12 gauge pump which has a rubber shock aborbant cushion on it.
 
Possibly the same way "limp wristing" a semi auto pistol will cause FTE's.
The main section of a semi has to be held fast so the recoil of the bolt allows it to travel fully. I am not sure of how much it affects semi auto shotguns though. I am but a dumb ol' redneck pump gun guy:o

OK, I see what you are saying. I never had this happen yet...might be just luck. MIght have to ask that question separately.

...Maybe I'll do a forum search for recoil pads now.
 
I've installed a few recoil pads lately. I've been going with Pachmayr. The main reason is that Limbsaver has a tendency to compromise and use one pad model for too many applications. For example, Limbsaver thinks that the Winchester model 70 and the model 94 use the same pad. Pachmayr recognizes there is a very slight size difference between the two applications and makes separate models for each of them. I've also done 2 pachmayr grind-to-fit models lately and both turned out very good. Not show-room quality but very decent for a shooter.

Get a Limbsaver. Night and day. Seriously. I went from an 870 with a brick on the end to an 1187 with a Limbsaver. (I did try the original 1187 brick also, just to see) The thing feels like a .410 now, by comparison.

In side by side comparisons, I have rarely, if ever, seen a product prefered over the Limbsaver.

Sounds like there might be some different opinions on which is better between Doyle and Peetz






(This has ceased being a slug thread and now is a recoil pad thread. It seems like the slug question was moot. However, that being said if anyone knows where to buy magic zero recoil 20 gauge slugs you may chime in anytime.)
 
The only 20 gauge slug I've used extensively in the Rottweil Brenekke. It kills like the 12 gauge slugs. However, it's not low recoil. A bit stiff,actually.

Re pads,there's examples of both the Decellerator and the Limbsaver here on divers guns, including shotguns.

Both are great. The sporting Pachmyer is a hair easier to mount consistently, the Sims( Limbsaver) a touch softer and better at attenuating kick.

KickEez is up there also. The big 1 3/8" Magnum pad is possibly the best at reducing kick.
