Which SIG?

Well the moment of truth is about to arrive. My wife says that I can get another handgun. Yippee! I've been looking at another SIG in 9mm and had a couple of questions.

1. Are there any real preferences among you all regarding the full size 9mm versus the compact?

2. If so, what are they and why?

3. Can you still get hi-cap mags for either version of the SIG fairly easy?

If hi-cap isn't the bottom line, consider a 225. They're being sold very cheap these days. I just bought a NIB 225 w/ night sights and k-kote for $459.95 thru Precision Armory in TX. Beats the heck outta 6-750 bucks. They are single-stack 9mm (8rd) however. I didn't buy it for capacity, I bought it cause I could add a Sig to the collection for cheap.

In my opinion it would have to be the Sig 229. No question about it. It isn the Best all-around Sig IMO. It's the only one I like other thzaan the 228, and 232.

Ben,

Why would the 229 be the best choice? And why is it not one of the best SIGs?

Thanks for the input

With all respects due to the gentleman who recommends the P229, I have found it to be one of the least accurate Sig models. Don't get me wrong, its accurate; however, compared to the P226 and P228 IMHO it is lacking somewhat (from my experience). I have found the P228 and P226 to be the most accurate Sig models. Maybe its just because the grips fit my hand better, I don't know, but I get very good groups with the P228 and P226. My advice is to rent as many Sig models as you can and see what model works best for you.

NO BS hands the bestest SIG there is>.............
228 followed by the 225 and 226. If you think your are going to conceal it buy the 228 or 225. 229 just plain old doesnt balance like the 228 or 225.

Concealment is not my biggest worry. How about hi-cap mags? Still available fairly easy?

229 in 9/40/357, then 239, then 228, then a 225.

For my reasons (durability/capacity), which may not be your reasons.

I own a 226 and a 245 -- great shooters, both of them. I put Pachmyer grips on my 226 because I like the width, but everyone else hates 'em.

Found an "old" NIB 226 at a local shop, $745. That's about the going price 'round here, but this one had 2 high-caps, which will run about $100 each, when (if?) you can find them.

Also, and this is just a coincidence (?), my 245 fits my 226 holsters (the muzzle is about 1/2" shy), and the 220 mags fit the 245. Not sure if that's also true of the 9mm straight stacks, but I wouldn't be surprised.

sks, 9mm SIG? The SIG P-225, P-226, or P-228 would be my choices. Not necessarily in that order.

If you wanted a .40 S&W or .357 SIG, I would have said the P-229. If you wanted a .45 ACP, I would have said the P-220.

But, for "nuts on" accuracy, reliability and great balance in 9mm, the 225, 226, and 228 are the way to go.

If you want hi-cap, the 228 is the way to go. It can use both the 228 and 226 mags. It is as accurate as the 226 but gives up a bit of site radius over it's bigger brother.

Genuine SIG hi-caps mags (normal mags) are very expensive for the 228 and 226. You can get the reduced capacity (10-shot) mags at a reasonable cost.

The 225 is the most compact of the three, but is a single stack deal. Genuine SIG mags are cheap for this model.

I don't like the SIG P-245s. The grip is too short (no place to wrap my pinky)!

Can't comment on the polymer framed versions as I haven't been able to test any.

Regards! DaMan

I'd say get the one that feels best to you and try them out if you can. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. The most accurate Sig 9mm and the most accurate Sig period is probably the P210; but you pay the price for it, usually $1000+.

Your choices for 9mm are the P210, P226, P228, P229, P239, and P225. 15 round 9mm mags are available for the P226 and also fit in the P228 and P229, though they stick out a bit. 13 round flush fit 9mm mags are available for the P228 and P229 but they are expensive.

I'd take a P228 over the P229 as they are generally the same size but the P229 is slightly thicker in the slide and heavier; though it does have a stainless slide which should be better in corrosion-resistance. If you want a P229 get it in the .40/.357Sig version.

The P226 comes in two versions. The newer ones are made with stainless steel slides in 9mm, .40/.357Sig. The older folded steel slide versions are slightly lighter and most people prefer it because it's German made/assembled and has the proofmarks whereas newer P226's are made here with imported frames.

Some people don't like the P239 grip but it's a slightly smaller gun than the P225 and has a stainless steel slide. The P225 is a fine gun and is considered the "sleeper" in the US market and is German made/assembled.

I'm going to have to agree with Ben and other who think the P229 is a great choice.

1. Stainless steel slide...much better rust protection. The extra weight is around 1.4 oz or around 40 grams, which is nothing really, if it was a pound (16 oz) heavier that would be different but I think its barely noticeable.

2. Size...fits my hand perfectly, with hogue grips, absolutely a dream to handle.

3. This is just personal preference but get a two tone model, it has a better finish and I think it looks better.

But really, any sig you pick, you'll get an awesome pistol. It's like choosing between different models of Mercedes Benz, they all are great choices :)

I haven't seen the 225 but will look that one up and see if it is to be found in my area. Already own the P220 .45 and love it.

The 225 would make an excellent companion piece to your 220, sks. I would have a hard time choosing among the 220, 225, and 226 if I had to. But, for me, the 225 is the most comfortable to hold pistol I've ever picked up. If your comfortable with 7 rounds in your 220( regardless of the endless 9-vs-45 debate  ) then I think the eight rounds in a 225 would suffice as well.

Parabellum, I'm very comfortable with 7 rounds of .45 in my P220. Unlike others, I hit what I aim at. :) Seriously, I don't plan on getting in a situation where I need 5 extra 15 round mags. And I don't think many if any civilians have ever gottin into that situation.

That having been said, I'm looking for the 9mm SIG because 1) It's much cheaper to shoot, 2) I like SIGs and the high cap mags make range time more enjoyable. The P220 can be a pain when you have to reload magazines often.

So the 225 is a single stack nine? Is it compact or full size?

Thanks for all of the info.

sks: I just bought my first Sig the other week, the newer stainless version 226 in 9mm.
I just recently put 300 rounds of Seller&Bellot ammo through it. I did not realize how accurate the Sigs were until I shot the 226. I just can not wait to shoot some better ammo through it. The S&B was accurate, but it was extremely dirty. It took a while to clean it. Mecgar mags seem to be the best deal going if you want some quality high caps at a reasonable price with a 15 or 17 round capacity. I like the bar dot sights on the Sig and will not put any night sights on it. You will not go wrong with the purchase of a 226. Mike at Precision has the best deal that I found on the 226's and the 225's. I paid $570.00 for the 226, and he gave me a great deal on a used Sig factory high cap at $40.00.

sks,

Yes, it's a single-stack compact. Great balance and feel. (single stacks seem to fit my hand better) It's much like a slightly-scaled-down P220, which also has great balance and feel.
