I am now faced with a choice. I REALLY REALLY want a Sig. I already have a Kimber 1911 Full Sized, so I figure it might be time to go with something smaller, and not in a .45. I am looking at either a Sig 228 in 9mm, or a Sig 229 in .40. Any opinions and experiences with these guns?

Sorry, I can't cast a vote because although the 228 and 229 are physically the same, you are talking about two totally different calibers.

Now, if you are looking for a 9mm, I'd recommend the 228. It's lighter and most of the 229's weight is up in the SS slide making it top heavy, IMHO.

You will get suggestions by some to get the 229 in .40 or .357 because all you have to do is buy another Sig barrel (opposite to the one you have) and the gun will interchange between the two. After that, a 9mm conversion barrel from someone like BarSto will give you all three calibers out of one platform. Personally, I wouldn't do it. But, you have that option.

Again, both guns feel almost exactly the same. So, go with the caliber you want the most.

One Sig for you, and one Sig for me-

from your polls, I voted for the Sig P228; as it balances better
than it's counterpart, the P229. The P229 always seemed a
little "top heavy" to me, + I don't care for the .40 caliber. Of
course, many member's here can and will tell you that the Sig
P220A in .45 ACP is my favorite; and they are damn well right.

Best Wishes,

Tough choice. I've got both the 228 and 229 and I like them both. If you want options down the road, the 229 is the way to go as Redhook mentions. The 228 on the other hand fits/feels better in my hand.

All of the above. High caps for 40/357 are now $120. That said I've got a 229 with .40 and .357 barrels, and I love it.

Since you shoot a 1911, I'd suggest looking at the SiGPro's. I like my SigPro, maybe even more than my Classic SiGs. Also. the takedown and field strip on a SiGPro is more like a 1911 than the Classics.

Unless you're married to the idea of a full size frame...or are able and willing to afford high cap mags, consider the 225 or the 239 in 9mm. I've owned both and they're excellent weapons. Sure they might lack the cache of the 228 or 229, but I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

I have owned both, and still own the P228. I liked them both, but I like the P228 better so the P229 was traded for an HK91.

Go with the 40 in the 229 have carried one on duty now for two years great weapon
Carry the 220 in 38 super off duty, slim and full size recoil is just about nill

I held both and could only afford one. The one I chose was the 228. I love making choices where either choice is a correct answer. Someday I hope to have a 229.

But better than the P228...

...is the P226. Not much lost in concealment and a little more controllable, longer sight radius. Either way, make mine nine.

Keeping with the original two choices instead of interjecting others, I have to vote for the .40S&W/229 even though I do like the 228/9mmx19 also.

Hey Dude, if it'll help your decision... the CEC just approved the Sig P229 9mm for the entire department. It'll be issued to all new recruits... meaning you when you decide to come on. All current personnel are still stuck with the good ol' Ruger P95. Yippee :)

In other words, don't worry about what to carry when you decide to become a cop. Just buy what you want. I say go with a two tone P239 in 9mm.

Both 2 good guns-can't go wrong with either. The P229 is heavier because of its slide which is made from one-piece of solid metal. If you are going to CC the weapon I would give the P228 a slight edge.

Sup SDForce, remember, don't tempt me, I'm tempted enough as it is. I went with Dong to Iron Sights in Oceanside and rented a Sig 226 in .40. It was SWEET. My groups were almost the same as my Kimber. Don't worry, if I went SDPD I would go with the 226, but I'm looking into a more compact fun gun. I really really want a Sig now. Damn you and Lon for showing me the 228. :)
