Which semi-auto?

Okay, I posted a couple of specific posts in the past week about some semi's I'd been looking at but figured maybe I oughta check and see what I might be missing.

I'm toying with picking up a semi-auto, mostly just because I don't own one :) (I'm a shotgun addict, I admit it!). Anywho, as I don't really need one I'd like to keep costs as close to $500 or, better yet, under $500 if possible.

My potential use is as follows:

- Turkey gun
- Casual trap and/or skeet
- possible double duty for defense (I don't need a defense gun but I like knowing it can do double duty)

My criteria so far is:

- no more than a 24" barrel
- capacity of at least 4 rounds with 5, or the addition of an extension tube preferable
- ability to use a wide variety of shell types with a minimum of gas system regulation.

What am I looking at options wise?
 
Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. I'd already ruled out the 11-87's due to cost. They were what I was initially interested in but to far off the scale for me at this point.

What's the hardest part of the criteria to find in the sub $500 range? The gas system? I've started doing some research and have seen some stuff that meets or comes close to the criteria but I haven't found much feedback on them is the problem. The Turkish Huglu's meet all the criteria. The Russian MP-153 most of them (although it's a pig, see other post). I've seen some used Mossberg semi's very cheap but honestly don't know anything about them and haven't seen much posted on them.

I'm certainly not adverse to buying used, in fact I was looking at the Browning A-5's, although even used most are still out of my budget.

Maybe this is a more pointed question: what features am I giving up in the sub $500 range?
 
Used 1100

Hello. About a week ago I was in your situation - didn't need one, but wanted one.

I would suggest looking for a used Rem 1100.

I have seen many several for sale @ auctionarms.com and the Kittery Trading Post

Most are trap guns, 28 or 30" barrel. However, as they usually bring $280-350, this leaves funds to have the extant barrel shortened or to purchase a shorter one.

The Rem 1100's have a solid reputation - take care of it and it works.

I was just in the local Wally World and they have new synthetic stocked 1100's for 369.00. It has a 26" BBL. I need one like I need another B**&hole but at that price I guess I have to make more room in the Gunsafe. You can buy the Extension for the Mag. Only drawback is 2 3/4" chamber. I only shoot 3" in turkey season anyway!
 
Wow, $369 for an 1100! Synthetic is fine by me, not sure about the 2 3/4" chmaber though. 90% of the time that's be fine but for Turkey I'm thinking I'd want the 3" shells. Still, that's much better than I anticipated for any of the Remingtons.

Makes me think of yet another question though: what are the major differences between an 1100 and an 11-87?

look for a used Rem 1100 MAG - they will take the 3" shells you want for turkey hunting...
