Which Semi-Auto?

I want to get a semi-auto rifle, but I have no idea which one to get. I know nothing about these guns , but am interested in learning. I would like something in the range of $400 or less. It will mainly be a plinker, but who knows what the future holds? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thankyou Rh3

AK Rifles assembled from New Romanian Parts Kits and several domestically manufactured parts.
Legal to use with original high capacity magazines. Each rifle comes with one 10rd and one 30rd magazine.

New condition

SAR 1 7.62X39cal $309.95ea

Next you should save up & buy an AR
Then you will need a FAL...

i say git an M1 Carbine you can git one used for about $250 to $400. and for a plinker you can git a Box of 50-round of ammo for about $10 :D

IMHO Plinker=.22LR
Ruger's 10/22 stands out from the crowd due to custom parts availability. If you want a centerfire rifle, an AK or SKS in 7.62X39 is a good choice. Ammo is cheap, and the rifles aren't expensive either. 7.62X39 is adequate at short ranges for deer, if the future holds any hunting.

Rh3, welcome to TFL! You're going to like it hear.

One piece of advice you'll hear over and over again here is to determine your use of the tool (firearm, in this case), and let that be your guide. You say you'll generally plink with the rifle, and I assume you're considering defensive uses when you refer to 'what the future holds'.

dZ gave you good advice. Also, check out www.ak-47.net , including their discussion forum - their discussion is a little different style than TFL, but there is still plenty of good advice. The advantage of the AK is that they are very dependable, reasonable in price and accuracy, and would fit your intended use. Also, buy ammunition and mag's while you can.

Try to buy one of these in person, with advice from a more experienced hand. The quality varies on these 'budget' AK's, but I hear plenty of guys indicating they find decent examples.

Save some money for training as well ... many trainers offer a weekend class on using your rifle. Learn to shoot safely and effectively.

Good luck with your purchase, and take care. Regards from AZ
