Well, I've narrowed it down to these two scopes; Nikon 3-9x40 for $169.99 or leupold vari-X 11 3-9x40 for $209.99. Cost has always been an issue so this is it or a lesser scope. Any imput will be appreciated. Thanks, j.s.

What are you hunting and where. Both are good. I would lean toward Leupold, extremely durable. Good luck!!

Anything that lasts 30 years and accompanies me on unplanned trips down mountainsides without breaking gets my vote.

I vote Leupold.

The Leupold is the better scope. Wait if you have to, but I'd spend the extra $40. You'll be glad you did.

Thanks everyone for your replys. Leupold it is! DO you think a 9 power scope is really needed or would a 7 power suffice? I'll be hunting in ne washington state (woods mixed with some open fields). Thanks again. j.s.

Just because it goes to 9x doesn't mean you have to crank it up to there. With my 3.5-10 VariXIII I often have it on 4 or 5 when in dark timber. It's always nice to have when you need it.

muleshoe is right. The 2X7 is a little lighter, but that only shows up after ten or fifteen miles of walking...

Unless you're like us decrepit Social Insecurity types, get the 3X9. :)

Keep in mind that if they both cost the same you are getting a 20 percentcharge per scope due to duty. You pay Uncle Sam for the privilege of using the import. Or in other words you are paying more fore less

Gale has a good point. I would like to keep my money stateside. What about bausch&lomb scopes? They seem to be high quality and reasonbly priced. Anybody familiar with B&L?

I have one Bausch & Lomb Elete 3000 3X9X50,
it's a great scope but larger than my Leupold Vari-X 3X9X40 scopes, but this should be ovious. Either of these scopes should serve you well. Good Hunting. :)
