Ok, Im checking out these two scopes for my AR tell me which one I should get Simmons Aetec Model 2100 2.8-10X44 or the LEUPOLD VARI-X II SERIES 3X9X40 MATTE SCOPE. This is for my bushmaster AR-15 and i want to use it as a longrange rifle like out to 550 yards. Thanks

w/o a scope what is keeping you from using it out to those distances? USMC KD range is 500 yards w/ iron sights.
if you must put a scoe on it, i wouldnt go above a 2X or 2.5X. it's really not nessasary.

See, the iron sights are bigger than my target out at more than 100 yards. And I want to trick out my AR. I just saw this simmons AETEC for 125 and was wondering if it would be a good scope. But i suppose i should just get a leupold. But I dont know what version to get.

MD...you DO get what you pay for. Leupold stands behind their products, and I daresay that they're a damn sight better than Simmons' scopes. The 3-9X40 is a good choice. It's Leupold's most popular model, if that tells you anything. Here's a link to the best deal around on a 3-9X Leupold:

Be sure and spend enough money to mount that scope right!

Leupolds cost more than other brands, but as Gale McMillan explained in a post somewhere out there, you're buying quality and the assurances of a lifetime warranty - even if you're not the original owner! Go Leupold. You won't regret it.

BTW, I have 3 Vari II 3x9 myself (2 gloss, 1 matte).

I have a Simmonds Aetec and I like it. I credit its wide field of view on the 2.8 power setting for a one shot kill on a close range running deer.I had a problem with a simmonds that I purchased used a few year ago. I sent it to Simmonds with a check for $7.00 they fixed it no questions asked. I also own a Leupold 3-9 gold ring it is also a nice scope.

I have used Leuopold scopes for years in some rough conditions, the perform flawlessly and have a good company that cares about CS behind them.

I have a Leupold Vari-X-III, and it is a beautiful scope. I don't think you could go wrong with Leupold, though they aren't cheap.

As RiverRider said, don't scrimp on the mounting either. There are some very cheap mounts for the AR-15 that are not what you want to use.

I have been a tightwad and a hardhead. Over the years
I have bought the Simmons and the Bushnell and the
Tasco...
Recently I was in an extravagent mood and bought a
Leupold, their cheapest 3x9 (VariX II in Matte from
Natchez at $218).
I have seen the light. I have had a religious
experience. The prophets that repeat "you get what
you pay for in optics", and the prophets that claim
Leupold is top-shelf - follow their lead.
It is night and day...

Let's see.I have currently a Leupold Vari-X II 3.5-10x40, Vari-X III 4.5-14x40 AND LR 4.5-14X50(30mm tube)and a M8 6X. Then I have a Leupold Spotting scope, 2 pair of Steiner binocs. Would have to say I like the Leupold. The top scope among shooters at our matches appears to be the Vari-X III 4.5-14x40 LR. Go figure. Is that a flat-top AR ? Can't go wrong with a Leupold.

You might consider one of the new Weaver Grand Slam scopes.
They are nicer then the Vari X IIs for about the same price.
