Which scope for a new Savage?

The wife has cleared me to spend $200.00 or less on a new scope for my new Savage 270. I have narrowed it down to the Nikon Prostaff and the
Leupold Rifleman. I like the BDC recticle on the Nikon and I have experience with other Prostaff scopes as well. I haven't owned a Leupold scope but I have heard nothing but praise for them. If you have expierence with either of these let me know what you think. They both get great reviews on Cabelas so Im not sure if I could go wrong with either. Looking at a 1 piece base from Midway Usa. Believe it is DNZ game reaper ring/base system. Also looked at Talley Lightweights but the Savage is Long action so Im leaning toward the DNZ. Let me know what you think. Thanks

Nikon ProStaff 3-9 X 40 with the BDC reticle!! I just replaced the scopes on my two rifles with them and for $160 or so each. They are as good as I'll ever need.

And I went with Weaver bases and their Grand Slam steel rings. Very solid.

:D

What are you using the rifle for?
Hunting?
Target?
What ranges?

3-9 is pretty universal for hunting...
Bushnell has a nice 10X Tactical that would make a great target scope that's on sale at Midway now for two bills.

Ill mostly be using this rifle for deer hunting. Id say 95% hunting and 5% target. For once I wanna buy a nice scope with solid bases/rings. Been buying cheap stuff all my life. Im really thinking the Nikon with the BDC recticle will work out great for me. If I do go with this Nikon should I get the Talley extended front base or the Standard base?

Ok warbirdlover will do. The scope is in stock, but Midway is backordered till Thursday on the Tally bases/rings in low. I could order mediums, but I like to stay as low as possible with the scope.

Be careful, I normally use mediums for 40mm scopes but on the Grand Slam Weavers I had to go high. I didn't have a problem clearing the 40mm bell but the bolt handle wouldn't clear the back half of the scope and I couldn't cock the rifle! The back half of the ProStaff scope is large.

^^^ I would listen to him.

I mount so many scopes I can't even count and with the odd exception, Medium rings are almost always needed for a 40mm with a large ocular bell such as the Nikons.

I have the lows on a Rem 700 with the 4.5-14 and it is perfect.

But the Savage could be different.

Unfortunately the only way to tell will be by mounting the scope....

The mediums will definitely work, but I also like to get the scope as close as possible to the bore.

Ok guys thanks for the info. I will go with the mediums then. They are in stock anyway. Im sure they will work out great. Pics will be up soon.....
