Which Savage??

Plan on using my half of the tax return to buy a rifle. Decided on a Savage in 25.06, but now I can't make up my mind on which configuragtion.
Synthetic or wood? I understand the advantages of synthetic but don't care for the looks.
With or without sights? Will mount a scope but sights can be handy too.
The package deal looks attractive, comes with a 3-9x32 scope mounted but I think I would prefer an upgrade from the one included.
Then there's the Police model with the heavy barrel. Heavy barrel worth the extra 1.5 lbs?
Reason for choosing 25.06 cal. comes on recommedation of huter friends. I'll be using it on Whitetail / mule deer and the occasional varmit. Need something light in the recoil dept. as my 14yr old (small for his age) will be using it too, he wants to get a deer next season. However I am open to suggestions here too.

The scope on the combo isn't very good.

I chunked both it and the mounts on my 7 Magnum.

The scope is good enough for a .22 rimfire which is what I use mine for.

The recoil pad on it doesn't cut it either, get a decelerator for $25.

I have a Savage Tactical, which has a heavy barrel, in .223 with a synthetic stock. No sights. I don't use see through mounts so that the scope is as close to the barrel as possible.

One thing about the stock is the forearm does move side to side some. If your looking at one try moving it by hand. Some people don't care for this but I haven't noticed any problem when shooting.

Mine wears a Leupold 6-18x50 matte scope. The rifle is all black and I like the way it looks, and it shoots good. But I wouldn't carry it deer hunting it's too heavy.

I too have a Tactical Model - synthetic stock, 24" bull barrel, .308, no iron sights, Leupold fixed 6 power scope. Recoil doesn't ammount to much at all, even with 180gr's. Swede's right, my forearm is very flexible, but it seems not to matter, accuracy is very good. That said I would NOT choose it for a 14 year old (unless he plays center on the jr high football team ;) ) it's just too darn heavy, I'm not sure I'm going to carry it in our little Oklahoma mountains this fall. One of the standard weight barreled guns is probably better & they still have the dual pillar bedding. My own solution for my son was a light weight .308 using the 125 gr soft points designed for 7.62 x39 Russian, I loaded them down to about 2400 fps & had a rifle he could carry all day, had very little recoil & still was capable of taking a deer at close range. If you don't reload, one of the lower intensity cartridges like .260 or 7mm-08 (or .25-06) is probably your best choice-I remember shooting a 7x57 Mauser when I was very young & thinking it wasn't bad at all. Good shooting.

Thanks for the replies. The movement of the forearm on the synthetic did concern me. Biggest drawback of the wood stock is it's birch not walnut.
Thought about the tatical but if young son's going to use it I don't really need the extra weight. He's not shy about recoil, loves my Turk Mauser even though it about knocks him off the bench stool.
I didn't see a stainless model in 25.06 listed on the Savage web site but I'm told they do make one.

Hey SK,
I just handled a 110 package series this evening and it didn't have any movement in the forearm at all it was a synthetic stock. I myself am also looking into a .243 Savage 110 but I prefer the wood over the synthetic and its also a long action which I am not crazy about. But the package deal is very appealing since I can shoot it with the factory scope while I save for something better...
Good Luck in your search let me know what you decide..

 Got a savage model 110fp tactical with heavey barrel in 30-06 with a leupold mil-dot and target knobs, changed the stock to one of those stocks created by plaster(ulitmate sniper) and was a wise chocie to do so as I noticed that the foreend changed position when the weather changed.(not good). thease are good guns !!! love mine. its a chore to lug around all day. but that the trade off, if you was going to bench it for varmits a heavy barrel is well worth the extra weight. if hes 14 He wont even notice the extra weight (makes him tuff) so. thats my three cents worth....
