Which S&W might this be?

A guy just bought it. He says it was manufactured in 1957 and is a pre 29. I thought the pre 29s were five screw and had coke bottle grips. I realize a previous owner might have sold the coke bottles, but what about the screws? What should it say on the inside of the crane?

Maybe its right on the cusp when they switched from 5 screws to the current type

They switched from five screw to four screw, I think. The fifth screw was at the top of the sideplate. The fourth screw is in front of the trigger guard. You can see that one in the picture.

Then they dropped the fourth screw and went to a three screw. My 29-2s don't have the screw in front of the trigger guard.

There were only about 6,500 manufactured with the upper side plate screw (5 screw).

That certainly looks like it could be a 4 screw .44 Magnum.

Early numbered 29s were also 4 screw and, oddly enough, apparently some of the early 29-1s were also 4 screw based on what I'm seeing in the Supica and Nahaus book.

Pre 29's came in 5 and 4 screw flavors. Dash 2 was the start of the 3 screw.
The grips are post 1967. Dash 1's are scarce - they are the start of the left hand ejector rod threads and last of the 4 screws and made for a very short period of time.
