which Ruger .22?

I recently came across the chance to purchase one of 2 Ruger .22 autos. A ruger MKII or a Ruger 22/45. I put a deposoit down on the 22/45 to hold it, but I am still thinking of the MKII. the shop has 2 of them in stock. I like the 22/45 and I love the workmanship. it seems easier for changing mags quickly due to mag release button on the side, as opposed to the mag release on bottom of mag well. The 22/45 however feels a bit heavier and the MKII could even be carried and is a little more compact. The MKII however, is about 50 dollars more brand new. The 22/45 is 189.00 new and the MKII is 239 new with a shorter barrell version and both are blued. Anyone have any opinions on either of thses two pistols?
Thanks

I love my mkII. Never held a 22/45 but as I understand, the extra weight is because it is modeled after a 1911.

Mark II all the way, the Mark II is "THE" american rimfire auto pistol.
Magazines for the 22/45 can be difficult to find,in my area anyway.

If I were to get a new Ruger .22, it would be a stainless 22/45. I like the feel and design. But I would also look very hard at the Browning Buckmark pistols. I plan to pick up either a 22/45 or Buckmark before too long. right now I'm leaning toward the Buckmark. If it were available in stainless, that would cinch it for me. But the satin nickel may be close enough. I hate feeling like I need to wipe my guns off every time I shoot or handle them (as I due with my blued guns).

I went with the Mark 2. The 22/45 is a good gun but the grip get slippery when your hand sweats. and you can do a little better trigger job on the mark 2. just my opinion.

It had been awhile since I had been to the range, got to go Saturday. I brought along my 22/45, and can't say enough about it. I love this 22. I have the 5 and 1/2 inch bull barrel in stainless. It shoots great, great trigger pull, and I bet if I used a rest, I could get one hole targets. As it was, I got less then 2 inch groups at 15 yards. Not even really trying, (well trying to out do the guy next to me with the 9mm s&w at the same distance). I am glad I went with it because it is more like shooting a regular semi-auto, right up till it was time to clean it. Took me 20 mins to get it back together again.

I like my stainless Mark II with a 6 7/8" barrel. I've put countless thousands of rounds through it, and it's an accurate gun. It's a very good deal for the money.

Swatman, consider the Government Target Model if you can get your hands on one. It's got sight rails and a non-tapered completely round barrel (not slab sided).

Personally, I prefer both the classic looks and feel of the MkII. It fits my hand well. Your decision should be based on how the gun feels. Handle both extensively and buy the one that feels more natural in your hand.

The 22/45 has a plastic frame. The MkII has a steel frame. Given barrels of the same style (bull, tapered, or slab-sided) and length, a 22/45 will always be lighter than a comparable MkII.

If the 22/45 frame feels too small for your hand, keep in mind that you can add something like a Hogue Handall to improve the fit.

You will not “go wrong” with either one. I bought the 22/45 because it does a pretty fair job at simulating the feel of a .45. I then sent mine to Clark Custom Guns and had them do their relief job on the trigger guard that made my 22/45 feel even better. I would also suggest you consider a trigger job no matter which model you choosed. By the way, you might hear from some that taking down the Rugers is difficult but it really isn’t. If I can do it, anyone can. Just keep the instruction manual handy and refer to it step by step. Art G.

I have the Mk2 Competition Stainless 6 7/8" barel and I absolutely love it. I can hit clay pigeons at 50 yds with iron sights no problem at all. very accurate and very fun to shoot. However it is a heavy gun. So probably not the gun you are looking for. I have heard very little negative talk about either model. If you ever need mags for a 22/45 just go to cdnn investments. They sell them for 12 bucks or so. I bought my mk2 mags there. The only thing I would prefer that the 22/45 has is the mag release button. But the mk2's mag release is easy to get used to. Larz

I don't think you can go wrong with either. I have both, a stainless 22/45 5 1/2" bull barrel and a MK II ble 5 1/2" bull barrel. I like both, but prefer the 22/45. The grip angle is very close to a 1911 but a little thinner, but feels good if you shoot mostly 1911's. My brother shoots mostly Glocks and Lugers ,more slanted grip angle, he likes the MK II better. Of equal barrels, the MK II is a little heavier due to the steel frame vs. polymer frame. Choose the one that feels and points better.

I bought my first Ruger .22 pistol in 1968, and have rarely been without one since. The current version I have is the standard 4 1/2". Of all the Models, the best I've had was a 5 1/4 in tapered with target sights, but other than that the standard 4 1/2" is my favorite. The Govt. Model and the slabside are very accurate, and very bulky and heavy. the longer barrels don't feel as balanced to me, but many prefer them. The 22/45 is the only one I've owned which I really disliked, and I am very fond of 1911's.
