Which rifles can be readily converted to 300 Tactical/Whisper?

I was recently at a gunshop asking a fellow that works there about the 300 Whisper. He showed me an AR15 with an integrally suppressed 300 Tactical upper. I had never heard of the Tactical before, but it was certainly an appealing concept (I guess it turns out the 300 Tactical is a .300 caliber bullet shoved into a necked up .223 brass as opposed to the Whisper using the obscure .221 Fireball).

In any event, said owner of weapon mentioned that full capacity AR mags will feed the cartridges just fine... this lead me to wonder - What other rifles are readily converted to these calibers?

I was thinking specifically about a Remington 700, but do not know if it would be better to start with the .223 and rebarrel or do ?? to the .308. I like the AR, but would prefer a bolt action for my first suppressed rifle.

Any other ideas? Is an accurate, subsonic .308 just a myth?

It's no myth.
.300 Whisper would do well out of any autorifle intended for .223.
Especially the M96 in a shortened version.

Heh. JD Jones didn't sound happy, when I asked him about converting SKS's, years ago! :D (I was younger, then...that's my excuse, and I'll stick to it.)

Thanks for the info all.

Is there is significant cost incurred in the rebarreling of the .223?

George, I have no doubt as to the accuracy/stability of the Whisper and Tactical cartridges... they sound like just the ticket for a subsonic round. Apparently the .308 Winchester/NATO cartridge (not bullet) was not adequate in terms of stability at subsonic velocities and thus the search was on for a good subsonic cartridge with a .300 bullet?

Wouldn't it be possible to load an inert material to make up for the capacity lost by lowering the powder? I have no clue as to what reloading entails, but it seems to me that putting in some noncombustible material in a .308 Win brass would be easier than trying to blow out a .221 Fireball case. This way you would still be able to chamber full house .308 rounds with the same rifle (or upper), albiet with the accompanying sonic crack at supersonic velocities.

One thing, those Whisper cartridges with ballistic tips look very, very un-PC :D
