Which rifle should I buy?

Tomorrow I'm taking my Carbon 15 into the gun shop, with red dot sight and magazines, to see if I can trade it for a gun I'd like my local FFL to order me from Federal Arms. Now, there are several choices I could get for under 600 bucks.

H&K G3/HK91 clone, short barrel with welded fake silencer, $449. Scope base machined into receiver.

STG-58 Rifle. Surplus STG-58 parts on an Imbel reciever. $499

H&K G3/HK91 Centurion clone, full length barrel with muzzle brake. Also has scope base machined into receiver. $569

H&K G3 clone, same as above, but minus scope base. $495

FAL STG-58 Carbine, shorter barrel than standard FAL, takes metric magazines, comes with a high cap mag and muzzle brake. $549

OR, I could get a Romanian SKS ($134) AND an M1 Garand built on a brand new reciever ($397)

What do you guys/ladies think? I just want something with more OOMPH than .223, which is kinda a pop-gun....(IMHO :)

I should probably keep in mind that I don't know how much my dealer will give me for my C15 (it's new, but has had about 500 rounds through it. But with the scope and the 10 hi-cap mags I got with it, I should be able to get a decent price, even if I have to sell it through his store and pay him 10%) and I don't know what kind of surcharge he's going to give me for ordering from Federal Arms....

I'd go with the STG-58 over all the others as the Imbel receiver is a solid platform and parts and mags are abundant, for now. I think HK is overrated, not to metion overpriced and I wouldn't give someone a quart of warm pi$$ for one of those Century Garands(been there done that) as the real deal can be had for $500 from the CMP. Yea, you have to do a couple of things to qualify for a Garand like: shoot a 50 shot match(piece of cake, unless you work weekends) and belong to a CMP affiliated club(your state association). Now if your a LEO or ex-military you can wave the marksmanship criteria. Sorry if you've heard all the CMP stuff before, if not check it out( www.odcmp.com ).

I'd go with the STG-58. It's a great gun to shoot, and it's one that everyone should own.

I'd also pick up an SKS. If you look around, you can pick up 1000 rounds of Russian ammo for $80 - $120 . It's not the fanciest gun (I have a Russian SKS), but it's fun to shoot, easy to take down, and not too expensive.

Get the STG-58 rifle. After handling a G3, I decided that I just didn't like it. Also, the metric FAL mags run about $7 for military used, and $8 for new...the G3 mags start at around $20. I just bought an STG-58 and even though it's way ugly (it needs a refinish badly) it's still a sweet shooter. Make sure you get an Imbel or a newer Entreprise receiver. Try to get a bipod soon...you'll love that too.

My .02...

Bulgarian AK-47, Gordon Tech SLR-100 with old Russian furniture. I really feel for you cause I'm a college student (graduating Dec!) and really wanted an M1A. BUT, new ban will drive the price of these guys up and the x39 ammo is cheap right now. Plus, if you have never owned an AK, I would say now is the time to do is and get a NM M1A when you have that great job in a couple of years.

cheers

I thought about getting an AK. I had a MAADI AK awhile back. IN fact, and AK-47 was the first centerfire rifle I ever purchased! (my first gun was a neat Henry US Survival rifle I bought for my mom's farm) I guess that means I'm "dangerous and evil" by HCIs standards. I'm proud of myself!

I know 7.62x39mm is plentiful, inexpensive, and so are AK magazines. I also know that in an AK without a muzzle brake it feels more powerful than 5.56mm. But how does it compare (recoil, velocity, accuracy) to .308? What I was looking for is something that I could put a scope on and use at up to 300 yards, if necessary. I'd prefer .308, because my philosophy is, I can't have a machine gun, so I may as well have my "assault rifle" be chambered in a round you couldn't control on full auto anyway! I think I will get that STG-58, though....

Done and done. Rick Freeman, the guy that owns our local gunshop is a friend of mine and he gave me a good deal. I did a no money trade. My Carbon-15, with Ultra-Dot sight and 10 magazines, traded for a brand new STG-58 FAL in an Imbel receiver from Federal Arms. It gets better. Also in the trade he's going to order me 5 extra 20 round metric magazines (the rifle comes with one) AND a fifty dollar scope mount! What a great deal!
