Which Remington 700 to mod to M40?

First time post! Go easy on me :)

I'm trying to replicate an M40 as close as I can for my next rifle, and I am planning to mod everything except the original Remington Model 700 action. Can I get away with just buying a Model 700 ADL, or would I need to get something like a 700 SPS or a 700P? Those look nicer, but, since I'm hoping to swap out the stock and the barrel, I don't know if it even makes a difference.

Welcome Frakn,

The model 700's action is the same throughout the entire line, with the exception of finish, so yes you can use the ADL in your build.

Remington sold a M40 replica rifle a few years back, you can find them on the auction sites. Buying a factory-made M40 would probably be cheaper than trying to build your own.

If you are trying to build a replica of a M40A2 (current USMC sniper rifle with the MacMillan stock), you should buy a Rem 700 ADL or SPS or a used donor rifle and modify from there (make sure you get the short action). The action is the same no matter what model you start with.
