Which polymer gun to buy in 40SW?

I've been looking into buying a polymer framed pistol for some time and need some input. I've shot and/or owned the following pistols. CZ100(trigger too heavy & thin/painfull). HK USP (too big & blocky grip). Glock 23(funky trigger & stiff recoil). Glock 23C(this shot the best of all the polymer guns. It had a trigger job before I bought it). I'm looking hard at a Steyr M40 & am going to see one tomorrow night. The Walthers seem to be out of my price range and don't anyone EVEN suggest a S&W Sigma. Feed back please.

Have you looked at the Sigpro 2340? It has interchangeable grips, and it sounds like the smaller one might fit based upon your comments on the other models. You can't go wrong with a Sig from any number of perspectives, but naturally you have to get what fits best. I haven't shot a Steyr, but haven't seen any bad comments either, and quality should be great.

The Walther should be available for around $575, which is only about $50 to $75 more than a Glock. If fact, there's a guy on Gun Broker that's selling them NIB for $555. I own both the Sigpro 2340 and the Walther P99, and even though I love both of them, the Walther is by far my favorite of the two.

In fact, my brother shot my .40 Walther for the first time yesterday, and this morning placed an order for one in 9mm.

Go for the Walther, but shoot one first. Seems that people either love or hate this gun.

I don't have an opinion but I'm in search of the perfect .40 myself so I thought I'd post something to get this thread back to the top of the chart and see if it drew more posts.

Good luck...

The easy answer is the Glock. The Steyr would be my second choice. The only drawback to the Steyr is that it does not have the Glock's track record of reliability.

If the Glock 23 wasn't to your liking, maybe the Glock 22 or 27 will be. :)

Don't leave the SigPro 2340 out, give it a try if you can. I admit, I turned my head to them at first until I put two hundred rounds (four types of 40 ammo) through one. They're really are fantastic guns, I can't believe they havn't caught on. It's very reliable and accurate, brute strong and durable, and priced right. It replaced a Glock 23 I've owned since 94. But, unless your LEO, there's no standand cap mags for them. So if your looking for prebans, this ain't your gun. Anyways, you really can't go wrong with any of the guns the others have mentioned, good luck.

Of the 40s that I have owned the Walther P99 and the Glock 27 have been the best. The G27 outshot my G23s at 25yds with less recoil. If you buy the G27 you must factor in an aftermarket recoil rod/spring in the price vs the Walther as the stock spring is too lite.

4 Glock 23's. 6 years. 0 stoppages.

Plebeian? Maybe. Reliable? Definitely.

I paid 550 for my 9mm P99 NIB. Not much more than the Glocks are going for nowadays. And remember, with that you get 3 grips, 3 heights of front sight, and an adjustable rear sight. And oh yeah, the box has hinges!

My choices would be a Glock 23 or Steyr M40.

As far as your dislikes of the G-23, there are a few different trigger configurations for Glocks, try them & decide which best fits you. As far as recoil, try a heavier recoil spring w/ a steel guide rod, and an Agrip.

As far as the Steyr, if you can, purchase one w/ a 10,000 or above serial number. It should include the upgrades Steyr has made to the M40. Great pistol, but I agree w/ PTGDVC, it has yet to develop a track record of it's own when compared w/ some other pistols. However, I believe w/ GSI's committment, it will!

Best,
long shot!
