Which one to buy EAA Windicator/Taurus 608/Taurus 627

I'm considering as my first revolver getting a 4" .357 (on limited funds) and these are my choices. What are the pros and cons on these.

The Taurus guns are good....either would be happy in my safe.
The Windicator I have wondered about also...supposedly very well built and a good shooter....very inexpensive. Makes me wonder if they are "that good".
shoot well

I can't comment on the EAA.

The Tauri are good enough guns, but the ones I've handled have not been *great*. I actually was about to get myself a 608 (and one day, still might) when I realized that, for the money, I could get a used S&W and move up into a higher class of revolver. The Tauri in question would run you from $375 to over $500. You can get a good used S&W for less than the bottom of that range.

If it's absolutely just for semi-disposable fun, that 608 (with its eight shots) would fit the bill. I'd get the 6" barrel, though, as it has the super-cool vented rib. The 4" version doesn't.

The choices are hard because this is the info that I reviewed:

EAA Windicator
4" bbl, 6 shot, 38.4oz., blue finish, listed @239
Taurus 608SS4
4" bbl (ported), 8 shot, 44oz., stainless steel finish, listed @$447
Taurus 627SS4
4" bbl (ported), 7 shot, 35oz., stainless steel finish, listed @$445

All three are w/i a couple oz. in weight and rd. capacity of each other. I really like the stainless steel finish but it not mandatory. So what makes one better than the other. Where I live the is a military store (MCX) that sells guns way less than local dealers/pawn shops and listed book prices.

I have the M 608 and it is a good (not great) gun. When I first bought it I bought it site unseen. At first I had buyers remorse, one reason it is a little heavy for a .357 but I was not planning to carry it anyway and the though of eight shots I liked. After owning it for a couple of years now it always seems to be one of the guns that gets taken to the range with me. It is fun to shoot, Its heavy and ported barrel make shooting .357 loads a blast.(no pun intended). I think if you decide to buy it you won't be disappointed. Having said that I think I would take the advice from the other posts about getting a used smith for the same money. Everyone has there favorite model of smith but one I would look at would be a M586 or a M686. You could find one of those models used and have some change left over for some ammo. just my nickels worth. good luck in your choice.

Happy shooting

The one I like

I have owned both of the Taurus. I just bought the 608 and love it. In the 6 in. it is a monster that is a lot fun to shoot. The 6in is actually over 6.5 ins. long due to the ported. I will be keepoing this revolver for a long time.

The price you have seems a little high to me. I just bought the 608 for $381 plus tax.

I have a Taurus Tracker 6in .357 7 shot

Great gun that is really nice, but I just bought a S&W mod 66 that was used for 100 bucks less that with a 4 in barrel shoots as good as the Taurus.

I've owned TWO EAA Windicators.....

I'd recommend an EAA Windicator over practically any other revolver of similar type. I owned one in .38 spcl and .357 magnum. Both were what I would call "best-kept" secrets. They're a best-buy for the buck, believe me. They're manufactured in Germany by H. Weiruch and I found the fit and finish up to all of the "name-brand" revolvers. They're heavy but with those excellent molded rubber grips extremely comfortable on shooting and recoil. I never had a bit of trouble with either one and both were the most accurate revolvers I ever shot. Go to your local dealer and bring a magnifying glass with you. Really give them a close scrutiny. some come with adjustable rear sights and others are fixed. The only complaint I had (and it is minor) is the grooved trigger. I prefer a smooth radiused trigger. You should be able to pick one up NIB for less than $200. I would buy one with confidence.

Thanks a million

Thanks guys for all the info. The prices I listed were magazine prices and NOT actual prices. The place where I buy usually sells $30-60 less than suggested retail/local dealers/pawn shops but I've seen up to $150 less. Today I'll swing by there and see how much all guns are.

I have 2 of the Windicators in .357mag (2"& 4")and a Rossi 972 .357mag which i'm sure has a current Taurus equivalent. The EAA's are put together better and have a much better attention to details than the Rossi.I paid a little over $200.00 for my Windicators and can say that they are truly THE bargain of the revolver world.

I'm going to chime in for the 608 also.

I too bought mine sight unseen way back in 96 ($425 6-1/2" SS). It's a large, heavy and at times awkward weapon. It's also my wifes favorite and the first handgun my 9 year old son ever shot so that should indicate it's recoil and characteristics. I bought it as a side arm for hunting trips and range/general outdoors duties.

Fit and finish were excellent, the polish job was flawless and still shines like new 6 years later. Trigger pull is smooth and even on mine. One thing I really like is DA the trigger has enough resistance that small children can't pull it. Accuracy is outstanding for me, I routinely use it for small game on camping trips.

my 2 cents- 608!

I have a 608 stainless and it's in the 6 inch barrel and it's my favorite revolver. Part of the fun is it's a large frame revolver (not really a carry gun- especially in 6') and the balance of the gun weight is very good. Also with the weight and the porting that 608 can shoot just about any hot load and it just seems to grin back at you wanting more. I reload and do not exceed load data but Alliant has blue dot and 2400 that can make a 110 grain bullet do 2,000fps and the 158grain do 1,500fps and is not a slow poke either. In a smaller frame, non-ported gun, this is very punishing (try sweaty hands with that classic S&W wood grip!- for added excitement). The 608 is literally rock steady and it really manages the recoil suprisingly well. Also impressive to me is the accuracy with these loads. The 608 is a sweet shooter with even the highest power loads and I dare say very accurate. The trigger pull is also good!

If your ok with a large frame revolver, definatly go with a 608. You can do a whole lot more with it, it's accurate and has a very good feel. I had a S&W model 17 and it was a nice gun, but it would hop around quite a bit with the "warmer" loads and it eventually will effect your accuracy if you find yourself flinching anticipating the recoil. The 608 is just the right kind of gun to get the best out of a .357 cartridge.

I'm not going to tell you the Taurus is like
Freedom Arms in it's craftsmanship. It's above average but it does have a lifetime warranty. Something breaks, Taurus fixes it. I'm not sure what S&W will do if you buy a "classic" and it breaks. And I'm not trying to stick it to the Windicator owners either, but what do they do if there gun has a problem? (We all know that there are some manufactures who never make a lemon or there products are always perfect right?). For about the same money, Taurus has the best warranty too.

If your not a fan of large frame revolvers, have really small hands or plan on using a revolver for a CCW, the 608 isn't a good choice. Best bet is to see if anyone around you has any of these guns and shoot them for yourself. Then you get to see what you like and what you don't. Everybody has there own likes and dislikes. I just so happen to really like the 608.

Thank you all but ...

I don't know much about revolvers and I had a wild thought of a 4" .357 as a carry gun until I went to the store yesterday. I may get the 6" when I'm looking for a range/house gun but I could never carry one of those things around. And after reading a lot of posts and magazines, I'm gonna get the Taurus 731UL and call it a day. Sorry
