so i'm looking at getting a new 22-250 and i'd like it to be a nice heavy barrel varminter. i was thinking of getting a 700 sps varmint, but then i came across the model 70 coyote light. they both look like great guns. i just shot my buddy's .204 in the sps varmint today. nice gun. i think the sps will be cheaper, but not sure. just wanted to get some opinions and pros/cons. obviously, if you own one or the other, i'd love to hear your thoughts. thanks in advance. oh yeah, i'm trying to pick up that .204 as well....think i've got convinced to sell:D

My new SPS .270 shoots like a dream. I understand the new model 70's do also. You'll pay $200 more for the model 70. That's probably the only difference. Go to a gunshop and check both triggers before you buy. There might be a difference there that would make up your mind for you.

I would keep saving for a higher end 700. But I don't like plastic stocks.

I bought the VLS a few years ago. I bought the VLSS thumbhole about a year later. Both in 22Varminter trim. Both are tack drivers and gorgeous guns. Did my own trigger job to both and they have great triggers.

The stock alone on the Winchester is easily worth the price difference. It is a Bell & Carlson Medalist with a full length aluminum bedding block vs a plastic tupperware stock on the Remington. The Winchester also comes with a stainless barrel that would be worth a lot more.

I wouldn't be surprised if they both shot basically the same, but I believe the Winchester to be a better built rifle. I own one of the FN produced rifles in 308, it is by far the best new gun I've handled or shot in years. Winchester is doing it right.

By the time someone changed to a better stock on the Remington it would make the Winchester the cheaper gun.

I love the Remington plastic stocks. I also like the Hogue stocks on some of them. You can put them down in the snow and never worry about it splitting open the week after. I told you guys a while back I filled mine with a mixture of Liquid Nails® and Airsoft® BBs. Now when I tap on them it's like they are solid... just a "feel/balance" thing.
