Which new .22?

So I'm in the market a .22 rifle for cheap thrills.

I've narrowed it down to two rifles that are in my price range, readily available, and have the quality to price ratio I'm after. These two are the mossberg plinkster 702 at $90 used and $130 new and the ruger 10/22 at $199 used. I would give the new cost but it's just out of my range right now.

I like them both.
I like the ruger for it's awesome accessories and customization options though I've never fired one.
I like the 702 for it's simplicity, price, and accuracy (I was able to get 1 inch groups with irons at 50yards which is a miracle for me and ANY gun) but the accessories, namely mags, are very limited in selection and relatively high in price for what they are.

So what do you think forum? Pay extra and get a more flexible platform that I've never tried or a more familiar platform that is no where near as flexible?

The 702 is a pretty good gun but its cheap and I dont think it will hold up as well as other rifles. I personally would hold out for the ruger if those were my choices. I have a 702 and its reliable as heck and accurate but its just not solid enough to last a long time IMHO. I bought my plinkster 2-3yrs ago and I got it and a 100 count box of CCI Mini Mags for $100 almost exactly at wal-mart.

Ok so probably go ruger.

On the marlin 795, I have not seen that one in my area(at least not what remember) but the price seems ok. How is this in the accessories selection for the marlin?

Ruger 10/22 would be my choice only I'd go to Walmart and buy a new one for $197 instead of the $199 for a used one.

I don't have any personal experience with the Mossberg 702 plinkster other tan shooting a friends to sight in. His was decently accurate at the 15-20 yards he wanted it sighted in at, but the trigger was horrible (not that it's good on a stock 10/22, it just was worse on this), and the whole gun felt kind of cheap. Regardless though I thought it would be a good beater gun and he liked his. I went to Walmart to buy one and when I got there and asked for it, the lady there told who actually seems to know what she is doing which is a shock for Walmart, but anyway she told me that she'd sell it to me, but that she'd much rather sell me either a Ruger 10/22, or something else. I think the other one was a Marlin 60, but I can't remember for sure. She told me that with every single one of the Mossbergs she'd ever sold, that the owner had come back because they were having problems with it. This woman has never led me to believe she didn't know what she was talking about in the past, so I tend to trust her opinion on this. This scared me away from it, and I told her I'd just wait as I didn't need one anyway.

I read some reviews online and saw some good, and some bad. Then I saw recently a guy on a local forum I'm on bought one and it had issues right out of the box. He sent it in for repair and they sent it back all scratched up. So he sent it in again, and this time they apologized and replaced it for him. When he got this one opened up, it was also scratched up from how they'd packed it. I'm not sure what the progress of it is now, but their customer service sounds horrible from the experiences he has had.

All of that combined just has made me view of the Mossbergs, not so great. However, I know some guys do have decent luck with them.

The Marlin 795 isn't a bad buy...usually around $125, has a $25 manuf rebate, too.

I've seen them at several Appleseed shoots, and they've done OK. The "micro-groove barrel appears to be very accurate.

I have a 10/22, and have $400-500 in it after applying mods..gets kinda pricey for me.

+1 on the 795

I'd take the Ruger over the Mossberg. I'd also take savage and the Marlin 795 over it. I have a 795, nothing special about it. It just shoots well and is very accurate. For around a $100 everyone should have one IMO. The 10/22's are very nice but the Marlin 795 is my favorite auto and Savage makes a sweet bolt action .22.

Ruger 10/22 has more mods but Marlin 795 has a lot

No question the Ruger has more options, but the Marlin can keep you interested for a long time. This thread goes on...and on...and on...

You can get a bullpup stock, aftermarket triggers, peep sights, all kinds of insanity. I had to look away before I found myself with a collection of 795s decked out in everything from walnut stocks for old-school appeal to that terrifying Evil Black Rifle look.

I'm a new shooter, so take my opinion for what it's worth, but I've found my 795 to be really enjoyable. The magazines are a pain to load, literally, but there are magazine loaders that keep the sharp edges away.

Hate to break it to you,but a bolt/semi Savage is in your price range and a much better gun than either of the two you are considering.

You will never go wrong with a 10/22 Ruger or a Marlin model 60 for semi-auto but, if you want a lever action get one of the Henry H001s they are very well made and they have a smooth as silk action. If you want something fancier try the Henry Golden Boy.

+1 on the Marlin 795, mine is reliable and accurate as can be I put a $30 scope on it, and i can place rounds within a 1" hole at 100 yards.
