Which Long Slide Polymer?

Hey guys,

So I am looking for a handgun that will mostly function as a recreational shooter/range toy and eventually my entry level comp gun. It will also be my home defense gun for the most part, but I am not planning on conceal carrying it hardly ever.

I am looking at the following full size 5 inch models:

Walther PPQ 5 inch:

Smith and Wesson M&P long slide:

https://www.smith-wesson.com/firearms/mp-9-m20

FN FNS 9 Long Slide:

Glock 34 Gen 4:

https://us.glock.com/products/model/g34gen4

Honestly, I think I like the Glock the least. I know they always go bang, and the aftermarket is awesome for these things, but I'm just not a fan of the looks, the trigger, or the grip. I know they are popular in competition shooting tho.

I dont know terribly much about the FN long slide, but I have heard good things overall. I know Nutnfancy had the standard FN 9mm and had a few surprise failures with his, but it could be a fluke. Looks to be a nice pistol overall.

I also heard mixed stuff about the M&P line concerning accuracy and reliability, but some people say this has been remedied in the new 2.0 version that just came out. I have no idea about that, but I held the 2.0 in the store and loved it. Very comfortable and super aggressive grip texture, which I liked. Triggers suck apparently but can be fixed in the aftermarket.

Finally, I really love the PPQ. Very comfortable in my hand, amazing trigger, slightly thinner. It just seems I haven't seen much mention of these as far as competition shooting goes. Also Walther offers one called the Q5 Match that is basically a 5 inch PPQ made for comp shooting. Seems like its very hard to find tho.

Anyways, for now I think I am leaning towards the M&P 2.0, but I wanted some opinions before I jumped into it. Thank you in advance!

From your list, I'd go with the Walther. Every PPQ that I have shot has had exceptional accuracy. The trigger is good to go right out of the box. They have excellent ergonomics and quality.

A friend is sold on the XD and has quite an assortment for all occasions, most recently a Powder River Custom 5.25. So check them out, too.

Another friend shoots a Plastic M&P Pro and I have a Plastic M&P Standard but with Burwell action and sights.

Lots of Glocks around, but I seldom see a Walther PPQ, Sig P320, or HK VP9 on the IDPA front.

I wonder if CZ will eventually offer a P10 F or L to go with the C. Too long to wait, probably.

I bought a 5" XD Mod.2 tactical in 9mm and like it a lot. That said, I own the standard 4" PPQ and whole heartedly recommend that platform as well.

I was looking for the same features as you and decided on the FDE S&W 2.0 with the 5 inch barrel. The main reason i chose it over the other 5 inchers was the option of having a external safety. I think the trigger is much better than the first generation and its more accurate than I am. I am very happy with the purchase. I think it is also less expensive than the others on the list. Grab-a-gun has had it for $459.

Of the ones you mentioned, I'd recommend the M&P.

I really like the XDm 5.25. Soft-shooting, accurate, reliable and has a fiber optic front sight that is standard.

Hadn't really looked at the XD. After some research, it seems like a solid contender for sure. It also seems about $100 more on average than the S&W. The PPQ seems to hang around the same price locally, higher than most of the ones I see online.

The M&P hasn't done it for me... yet. I've handled them in the shop and ran a few rounds through a M&P Pro... which made me buy the XD Tactical Mod.2. :)

I've posted some further impressions of my XD on my blog, link in my signature below. For some odd reason Wordpress has changed "XD" to a smiley face in m posts... no idea why.

More expensive but packed full of features, Grand Power X-Caliber.

5", outstanding trigger and reset, tack driving accuracy, reliable, great ergos, etc..

I think you answered your own question

So uh, I did a silly.

I didn't actually buy any of the guns I asked about. I bought this bad boy:

Not my image, but my pistol is identical.

I know, its hammer fired. I just really enjoyed many things about this gun. Really awesome single action trigger. Loaded with features. This baby holds 21+1 rounds!

I've yet to take it to the range, but I'm pretty stoked on it.

What do you guys think of these guns?

Well, I WAS going to suggest the 4.6 barrel CZ SP-01 Phantom as a full size poly pistol, but the P-09 is an eCZellent czoice as well. ;) The suppressor ready barrel is an outstanding 5.15 inch barrel length, right up your alley. If you ever want to slick it up some, the absolute best guys in the world are David and his Cajun Gun Works crew. https://cajungunworks.com/ They slicked up my P-09 and it's fantastic.

I have one of the S&W Pro's and after a little trigger mods it works great, but just for some odd reason I got one of their 2.0's as well. I don't think you could ask for much more than it has to offer.

I personally hate the M&P line and would never recommend them, but if you've handled one of the newer ones and like it then that might be the place to start. also the fact that you own and love the PPQ might be strong justification for exploring that option further, if for no other reason than maintaining familiarity with the design.

I have not played the FNS line since they came out but I was pretty underwhelmed by it expecially for the prices people were asking. they've dropped in price a lot though and I think a long slide might be worth it if you could pick it up for under $500.

a lot of the guys I know that run glocks tend to prefer the glock 17 longslide over the 34, so that might be another one to look at, although if you hate the grips and trigger, you're probably already three quarters of the way to hating the 17l as well. I will say, that even though I tend to despise glock, the 17l was the only one that has actually impressed me.

I will muddy the waters with 3 more models you might consider. have you looked at the springfield XD tactical, XDM 5.25, and the Canik TP9SFX?

the XD tactical should run roughly $500, and for me, the ergonomics are excellent and has good sights.

The XDM will probably have the best trigger of the whole lot, minus the PPQ if you trust the interwebs. it also has the highest flush fit ammo capacity out of the box(19+1). it has always been a little bit of a bucket list gun for me but I want an amalgum that makes no sense at all to anyone else but me(I want to combine the 5.25 slide with a compact frame to allow easier concealed carry).

The canik is a bit of a mystery. Century is the importer and even though just about any big box store that sells handguns carries the TP9 in one variant or another, I've never found a SFX in the wild despite being advertised by Century and CanikUSA for the last 2 years. the TP9SFX has cutout to allow mounting of red dots, 20 round capacity mags(which are the standard 18 round TP9 mags with a +2 floorplate), and weaver tactical sights which seem like they would be pretty comparable to both of the aformentioned springfield models. unlike most of the other longslide models which lighten the muzzle by cutting a big hole in the top of the slide(or not lightening at all), the SFX uses porting to lighten the muzzle, similar to the PPQ longslide but a little more aggressively to remove a little more weight. I'm currently on a weightlist for the SFX and am willing to wait patiently for it, but it might be a while before they make it here, I suspect that remedying issues with one of their other TP9 models is currently occupying much of Canik's attention.

I was going to recommend the CZ p-09...but you did one better.

I love, love, love my FDE 09, it doesn't need a 5" barrel that's for sure.

My next choice was gonna be the M&P 2.0 based upon my love for the old M&P line that I've shot (owned) and loved. I almost picked up the new 2.0 FDE in 9mm last month, but decided to hold off for the new CZ 10c. So I'll be picking up a 2.0 once the 45 version comes out instead. You really couldn't have went wrong with anything from the M&P line.

Guys, he already made a purchase... look about seven posts up.

Very, very nice. CZ has a great reputation for putting out quality products. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
