Which loaner revolver for trip?

Which is the better choice for a PP revolver.
I'm on vacation and have to use a loaner for a family trip. We're going to the NF to go on a boating vacation. I have my choice of:
S&W 19 2 1/2 in. .357 mag OR
S&W 10 4 in. .38 spl
They both fit in the fanny pack.
Which loads.
I usally carry an Glock.

Take the M19, load it with 125 grain Federal half-jacket hollow points. Practice with it before going, because the blast and flash is impressive (but so is the hole in the bad guy).

I'm not sure that the .357 in a snub-nosed barrel will give you much better performance than a .38 spl in a longer barrel. In fact, it may not do as well.

That shorter barrel will make it quite a bit harder to shoot well, too. I learned this from experience, as I've had both of those guns and a 4" barrel is a lot easier to shoot well.

Much of the propellant for the .357 will end up going out the barrel in the form of a large flash from a short barrel -- it won't be pushing the bullet.

+P .38 special ammo might be better in the the .357.

Try them both, and carry the one you shoot best.

I'm with Walt, assuming that Model 10 is up to handling +P ammo. If it is, I believe you'd be better off with it than a .357 snubbie, both from an accuracy and performance standpoint.

Either one. 125 gr. hot load if you believe in fast and hot. If you're of the "heavy and deep" school go for what ever load you can get in the 160 or up range with either.

If it were me I'd favor the Model 19 with a round butt. Easier (for me) to control and more consistancy for shot to shot placement in a hurry. If you prefer a square butt, take the Model 10 - you get even better sight radius.

Depending on what ammo you can get off the shelf - I'd go with which ever one feels best to you.

With either one you should take your selected ammo out and crank off a cylinder full just to see where it shoots with your hold and eye. A gun will shoot to whatever point it wants to shoot with a given load. But it's always nice to know what your partner likes so you can acommodate. (Just like marriage.)

I would go with the Model 10, because the Model 19 has adjustable sights that might hang up in the fanny pack. On the ammo, note though that the +P ammo will have a shorter barrel time and shoot lower than the standard .38 the gun sights are set for. Check this out if possible before leaving.
